Need advise on new barrel problem
« on: July 14, 2008, 04:57:00 PM »
Last weekend I received a new Contender barrel from MGM in 445 Supermag.  When I ordered it I told them I wanted to use Hornady 300 grain XTP bullets using the rearward (bottom) cannelure.  When I received it the cartridges don't fit because the throat isn't long enough.  If I have MGM redo the throat will they damage the chamber dimensions by reaming the barrel twice?

I appreciate any opinions offered.

thanks

They should not damage the chamber if done correctly. I do not know if they have one, but a throating reamer would be just the ticket in the is case. If all they have is the chamber/throating reamer, then they are going to have a hard time getting it done as the rim will be cut too deep. They could rent a throater to do the job, if they do not have one.

If you are brave enough to do it, you could rent a throater from 4-D (a sponsor of Graybeard outdoors) and cut it your self. You could cut it as deep as you like. Good Luck and Good Shooting

My original question is mute because the shallow throat isn't the only problem with this barrel.  After loading cartridges with the same bullets in the other cannelure, I found that the barrel will not fully chamber any 445 Supermag cartridges using Starline brass because the rim protrudes from the barrel not allowing the barrel to close on the frame.  This occurs with empty Starline cases also.  The barrel does accept 44 mag cartridges.

So the barrel has to go back.
