357 Max question
« on: July 11, 2008, 05:45:09 AM »
I have an orginal 357 Max H&R. This is not a rechambered 357Mag. My question is, what different kind of ammo will it shoot?

I bought this rifle from mt3030 along with a 444 marlin H&R

And don't forget the 360 Dan Wesson , granted this round is a handload only now , but some ammo can still be found from time to time at gun shows and mom & pop shops .

Yup, forgot about it!  :D  Max ammo can be found at GBO sponsor Reed's Ammo since you don't handload Ken, he may have 360 DW ammo too, not listed but he has a lot of stuff that's not listed. ;)

I have serious doubts that the 38 S&W has enough velocity to get a 147gr bullet out the end of the barrel...

Not sure the 38 S&W would even chamber in the rifle , Its larger in Dia than the 38 spl & 357's .

The 38 spl and 357's are .357/8 bullet dia and a case dia of .379 while the 38 S&W has a bullet dia of .3610 and a case dia of .3865

Hmmm. ???  Your no doubt right on that Stimpy.  I'm where my books ain't and I was going on memory.  Goes to show how good that is anymore.  What was the short 38 cartridge the 38 Spl. grew up from?  I know there was a short 38 we used to shoot in our Smith M&Ps.  Sure thought it was the S&W cartridge.  My Dad had a little break top five shot that took that round and I reloaded them using the 38 Spl. sizing die.  Never did have a crimp die but the recoil was so low the bullets never moved any.  Seemed like you could have almost swatted them down with a frying pan.

stimpy is right.  The .38 S&W has a larger bore then the .38 Sp/.357 Mag.  I think the specs are .362 or there abouts, with a larger diameter case as well.
