« on: July 06, 2008, 10:57:39 AM »
I have a .223 pro hunter that is 16" long.  I would like to knock it down to 12" or maybe shorter.  can this be done?  How?

Send it to sskindustries.com.  I sent my 15” 454 Casull Encore barrel and had it shortened to 12” and re-crowned for $50.00, plus I had their 6 screw T’SOB base with 3 rings installed for $88.00.  The return shipping I had to pay was $12.00, but that was over 3 years ago.

They still list shorten your barrel & re-crown for $50.00.  They do a great job and I wouldn’t trust anyone else.   I would call or email them for the return shipping prices.

MGO, Make sure you go to a qualified Gunsmith to have the cutting down and crowning. There are a lot of metal butcher out there I can't think of any better than SSK. Another would be MGM, good work and very good lead time. The old saying (Penny wise, Penny foolish) Just my 2 cents. Lou

Good advice on the cut & re-crown.

I would search this board a little more and read up on the 223 in a TC (if you haven't already) before you decide to go with a 12" or shorter 223.

Most folks seem to like at least 14" for a 223

Hornet, Bee or Fireball would be better suited in a 10" tube.

If you're sure then go do it. I just thought I'd give a heads-up

223 begs for a longer barrel. Had a 12" not remarkable. A 16 will likely give you 150-200 fps more.

SSK Industries would get my vote for the job.  The turn around time is fast and the work well done.

As everyone knows there are two length for firearm barrels; rifle and pistol.  You get better velocity from rifle barrels because they're longer.  Rifles are also heavier and more unweildy than handguns.  There is a compromise with everything.  What I'm getting to is that I think a 10 to 12 inch 223 Rem. barrel would be a handy length.  Yes, velocity will suffer a bit but you'll have a lighter and handier tool and handgun shooting is fun.

By the way, I have a Contender 223 Rem. AI handgun barrel.  It's recoil is very light and 0.5 to 0.75 inch 100 yard 3 shot groups are the norm.
