G-2 in .243Win or 6mm Rem?
« on: March 30, 2008, 06:04:39 AM »
Can anyone tell me if the G-2 will handle the .243 Win or the 6mm Remington rounds?
If you have one, how well does it shoot?

NO, they cannot!  The breech thrust is far too high with either cartridge for the G2.  That's why they made the Encore.  There are specific 6mm cartridges designed for the Contender, the 6mm Bullberry and 6mm JDJ are a couple.  Their performance is good but trails the .243 and 6mm Remington.

Thanks for the information. I was hoping for something a little more powerful than a .223 Remington to use on deer with my G2.

There is a whole host of them, like 30-30, 7-30 Waters, 45-70, tons of pistol calibers, etc.  Do a little research.  There are lots of options.

6.8 rem spc is the one that I have been thinking about until I'm able to add an Encore action to my closet.

The 7-30 Waters is a win win situation in the G2 contender.

It will handle all type of big game with 120 to 175 grain bullets if you reload.  Some factory ammo is available, but its expensive.

If you don't reload try the 30-30 Winchester.  Factory ammo can be found using 125 grain hollow points, of course 150 and 170 grain flat or round nose bullets and the Hornady Leverevolution Ammunition with 160 Grain Elastomer Flex Tip bullets.

I love my Contender in .30-30 AI. I have been shooting 150 gr. Corelock pointed bullets at near .300 Savage velocity. Before fall, I plan to try 125 Nosler BTs. That should be a flat shooting load.

7-30 Waters. Hands down one of the best deer calibers out to 200 yards. Nice eaaaaaasy recoil. Exceptionally accurate round. You will not be sorry if you got this in a 14" handgun barrel.

There are also 6mm wildcats that are safe on your G2 that will at least equal the 243 and 6 Rem.   The 6mm Super Bower comes immediately to mind for one.   Means having to get custom barrels and dies though.   A 6X47 of 6X47Imp might be enough over the 223 for you too for deer.

As suggested, the 7-30 Waters is also an excellent choice.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Except for the initial work to make cases a 6mm 30-30AI is an excellent round that will get you close with bullets up to about 85 gr.
