35 Whelen Varmint rifle
« on: October 20, 2008, 04:29:46 AM »
I put my Whelen together to hunt feral hogs at night with.  Unfortunately the hogs have evaded my efforts to test a 200 grain Hornady Spire point on them. However out at the lease there are a lot of raccoons and coyotes. I took one of each this last weekend. The coyote was around 200 yards off and the raccoon was 80 yards away. Both suffered ill effect from the aforementioned bullet started at 2500 fps. The raccoon was the biggest one I have ever seen and he will certainly no longer raid our cabin or our feeders.

Maybe you should work out a trade with the guys that are shooting deer with a 22-250 and everyone will have the right gun.  ;D Just kidding, that sounds like a bunch of fun. I hope that you get on the Hogs, lord knows, they cant evade you for very long.

Feral hogs are truly considered varmints with the smaller ones being edible.  Seems like our other lease members time their trips to the lease the weekend after I get there and fill the hog toys, reaping the benefits while I get no help in my efforts. However deer season is coming and my 7x57 will be my constant companion after the 1st of November with my 30-06 or 7MM RM being backup or unusual circumstance rifles.
