I want to shoot a 6.5 in a AR, 1:8 twist, medium range to 600, able to hunt up to hogs and black bears. I have a 6.5-284 bolt gun that I would like to conserve for long range. It came with a bunch of Win 284 that I would like to use for this project. This board have some thoughts?

My friend has a .260 rem in an AR 10, I'm not sure if anyone makes a 6.5-284 though.

I am not aware of a 6.5X284 AR. I do understand the desire to fire the same round/brass as your bolt gun, but the disadvantages would far outweigh the advantages of doing so if your AR use was posted accurately. With a maximum range of 600 mentioned the 260
or 6.5 Creedmoor in an AR is more than adaquate, in fact they can be used for target work fine out to 1,000yds. & beyond & the 140gr. will fly very similar to a 190gr. in 300WM. & is far better than ANY 308 load & I am a 308 fan. Barrel life is far better in the 260
than the 6.5X284 & the more std. rounds are starting to take the competition limelight for that reason. You mention Hogs & Black Bears, the 260 has more than enough horse power for them with the high SD 6.5 bullets of good construction. If you feel that you have more brass than needed for your bolt gun, you can sell a small amt. of 284 brass and buy a much larger qty. of 260 brass.
Just a thought, as the difference in barrel life would be huge & I view the AR as a volume practice/shooting tool.

And if you are a returning War on Terror vet, DPMS will give you one heck of an awsome deal as they did with my above mentioned friend. The gun dealers cannot even buy the rifles for what DPMS sell them to our vets for. Cudos to DPMS.

Ok say its down to the 6.5 creedmoore, 260, and what does the grendel bring to the party? I am asking your input on another AR for accuracy in shooting 120g bullets and up. I am a reloader so a wild cat is not a real problem if dies and cases are not a big problem or expense. I have a Bushmaster 223 in a 1:8 twist which would work 600 yd range. There maybe a option of adding a upper in wssm to fit the AR15 platform in 6.5 or 7mm. Do they have this available?

What the Grendel brings to the party is this round can be used with the AR15 platform, whereas the Creedmoor & 260 must use the larger AR10
platform. Of course the Grendel gives up some performance & the brass is a little pricey relative to performance.

I just plunked down for a Grendel upper for my AR-15. It should be here in about 6 weeks. The 6.5mm bullets have great ballistic coefficients for long range shooting, ie. up to 1000 yards. There is a good variety of hunting bullets from 90-130 grain as well. I ordered this caliber as it has a very good reputation for accuracy and is mild mannered and gives great barrel life. Living in the South East it will suit my needs for deer and hogs, and give me a change from bolt actions, especially useful for hogs! I am in the same boat about doing a 6.5 build. I thought about doing a 6.5 WSSM wildcat, but the bullets take up to much case capacity and there might be feeding problems and I didn't really want a Grendel. So I am jumping up to the AR-10 platform. It is about a pound or so heavier, but this is going to be a target and stand rifle anyway.

Going to the AR-10 opens up a lot of doors for you, caliber wise. Here are some of the considerations for calibers: 6.5 Creedmor, .260 Rem, 6.5x55, 6.5-284, 6.5x47 Lapua, or 6.5 WSM (This would be a little faster than the 6.5-284).

DPMS rejected WSM. the case head is too fragile for auto loaders, at least in their AR10. for short magnums they chose RSAUM. Its' case head is more robust. They have a production rifle in .300 RSAUM. You can wildcat that to your hearts content.

I'm probably going to go with a .260. This would probably be my cheapest route. Plus, the ballistics aren't too bad. If I do a 6.5-284 or 6.5 WSM, it'll be a bolt gun.

Either way, it won't be until next year. I'm getting married in September, so that pretty much kills my spending for the year!

I've got a good woman, otherwise I wouldn't be with her. I was watching guys hunting in Africa last night on the outdoor network when my fiance said "We could do something like that, you coudl hunt and I could tag along, with a camera." Anyway, after I changed my underwear, I realized I have a keeper!

I doubt that thought process will stick with her, but oh well, it sounds good right now.

Jasaon, I don't think you got my joke, but no biggie. I have a good woman also & have been married for 31 years. Actually I would not want it any other way. Seriously though, I spend more for toys than my Wife & I would bet others can relate to that.

You are the one that asked the original question almost 3 months ago, so maybe you can tell us what happened.

For the responders, some of us gave answers/info & if you read my links & the one from Old English, all of the 6.5 options were throughly covered for the AR action & the AR10 action & there wasn't much more to say without being redundant, so maybe some got bored & veered off a little.

So, since you brought it up, what did you do?

Well I can tell you that between this and other forems, I learned that there are a lot of options in the AR. You can stay in the ar-15 and work into a 243wss?. The 6.5 is available. Are you questioning me on my original thread, or the the fact that I do not care for ot responses? let them go to a chat room for over the fence conversation.
