Binoculars under 250$ ???
« on: August 30, 2003, 05:19:27 AM »
I have been looking for new binocs and was curious what anyone knows about the new pentax DCF HR II's. They are totally waterproof and are phase coated roof prisms. the old DCF HR's were not either.

I am comparing these to
Nikon monarch ATB phase coated roof
B&L Discoverer porro w/ rainguard which i think would be a great feature on Bino's
Eagle optics raptor porro

these porros are in the same price range as the roofs and I am wondering if they will offer a little better picture for the same price than the roofs.
I emailed bear basin and john at the opticzone and they both said the discoverer's were a tad better then the roofs in their price class.
the porros also offer around a 30% larger FOV at the same power

Any advice?

I think you'll be satisified with either.  One of my hunting partners (25yrs older than I) dazzled me at a youngster with his ability to see game.  Infact, I'm still humbled once in a while by his eyes.  Anymore, glass is so good (your selections have crossed the "cheapie" threashold) you'll find the biggest difference brand-to-brand is where you take them and which direction you point them. FWIW
