.45 Bizzely
« on: July 05, 2008, 02:36:59 PM »
I bizzeled my .45 Blackhawk with Midway USA parts, shortened & crowned the barrel,  milled a slot in the front sight blade & added a sliver of elephant ivory, & made grips.  I'm no expert, but I have fun!

Very nice, what barrel length is that now?

Only thing I wish my SBH had was the Bisley grip, but the 4 5/8ths carries very well.

Thank you, sir.

I cut the 7.5" barrel to 4 5/8" & put an 11 degree crown on it.   About that time I found a load it REALLY liked & that inspired me to get the Bisley grip, hammer, & trigger.   It was NOT a difficult job.  Had a piece of spalted maple burl from several years ago that finally got used up.

The Bisley grip is much kinder on my hand than the standard Blackhawk grip, esp. with heavy loads.

Ahhh yes, the Bisley - my favorite configuration single action.  Love theat style.  Nice looking one you made yourself there.  Really like the grips but they need a medallian of some sort.   Beware, you'll find yourself doing this to more than just this one.  ;)

I did this 5.5" SBH last year.  I cut & had the grip frame rewelded, which turned into lots of work, then made the grip panels from a piece of walnut that wanted to get used for something.  I like the way it looks, but it's not comfortable with heavy loads (surprise, surprise).  Yes, it's a home-made lanyard ring.

VERY NICE.  I however don't find the Bisley frame to fit my hand quite right.  Finally traded mine off and just have the regular frame with hogue grips.  Keeps the gun from twisting around in my hand so much with the heavier loads.  DP.

Negative. Beautiful wood should not be messed up with medallions or checkering! I hate it that you cannot get a rifle stock without checkering.

JCN: That's just bloody lovely. How did it go fitting the grip frame? I have a stock Blackhawk .45 Colt with the aluminum grip frame and black rubber grips and the grip frame fit is so sloppy it begs to be "Bizzled."

The bisley grip frame bolted right up with NO fitting to the original gun.   The "fitting" was matching up the outside contours with the revolver frame.  I did most of it with a belt sander and finished it with a 6" sewn cotton wheel mounted on a bench grinder using 320 grit compound.  Took me longer to make the maple "stocks".

The bisley trigger & hammer replaced the blackhawk parts perfectly with no mods or "fitting".  It installed just opposite of the removal of the factory parts.  I did not need a "third hand" or special tools.

There were no "directions" or instructions supplied with any of the parts.  Be sure you have some idea of what you are doing before you start.   I have previously removed & replaced (and modified) a standard Blackhawk grip frame in the past.  You probably should try that before you start buying bisley parts.  Learn about how to remove and replace the hammer strut and spring, & the trigger return spring.

I'm not a gunsmith or machinist.  Maybe I just got lucky........

Regarding your .45 :  ya can't buy a blued frame.  Consider using the contrasting stainless frame or coating it with Wheeler Eng. "Ceramacoat",  a really tough flat black bake on finish (about $29. per can) from Midway.
