I am shooting a Marlin 1895MR .450 Marlin. An inexpensive scope was "eaten" by this rifles recoil. This is primarily a Black Bear gun and I like red dot type sites for hunting over bait. Who makes a red dot site that can handle heavy recoil ?

I have Burris and a Millett. No problems with either. But, I haven't used them much, so I cannot vouch for long term durability with heavy recoil. I would say that my dot sights have about 100-200 rounds of .44 mag stiff loads with 240 & 300 gr. bullets with each in handguns. I once called J.D. Jones of SSK Industries regarding some work I had done and posed the question to him - which was a good, tough dot sight. He builds some real hand cannons. As I recall he said Ultradot was one he recommends. Hope this helps somewhat...

I have used a Leupold Red dot now for three years on a Tikka 9.3X62mm, It has held up well under some heavy recoil, Try Natchez.com. bought it 3-years ago for right at $100. Good Luck Old Moss

Aimpoint in a 1" tube for about 12 years now on 30-06's using handloads (Nosler 200 grain partitions pumped to max) . Swapped it out onto ny NEF last fall. I'm sold with a red dot scope for bear hunting.

I agree, nothing like that little red dot on that black target in the last minutes of daylight. What caliber is your NEF ?

All my scopes on my rifles are either Burris or Leupole with the cross hair in the center. I really don't know if either or these have red dot on the market, Cause I really am maken out fine with what I have.

NEF is 30-06.

I'm losing track of your posts and questions blackbear...you asked me about a .44 mag and I do use a Desert Eagle now but can't hit the broadside of a barn with pistols. Here's a link...guess I don't have that pic on my photobucket account.

We really wanted that bear bad since it was attempting to break into our cabin. It was a female with 3 cubs but I took her out regardless (I did have a permit). She woke me up at dawn looking in the cabin window and I grabbed the Desert Eagle off the table and actually hit her. Can't imagine what would have been left of our cabin if the four of them had gotten in.

I'm right in the middle of prep work for my annual coyote/fox hunt and running out of time so if I don't answer all your questions you know why blackbear.

I vote for Ultra Dot. They're the only thing that would hold up for me when I was shooting Bullseye and mounting them on the slide of a 1911. Plus they're fairly cheap.

For handgun sights I've become addicted to the "tubeless red dots" also called "reflex" or holographic sights. I've had a Burris Fast-fire for some time mounted on the slide of my AMT in .22 WMR and it has held its zero very well. You may think the .22 WMR has no recoil but the slide of an autoloader gives the sight quite a beating in both directions. They're also being made by Tru-glo, Trijicon and DrOptic. The advantage of these sights over the old tube sights is very light weight, 2 ounces or less, with very little bulk, if mounted in place of the factory adjustable rear sight the gun will still fit most holsters, and no need to fiddle with a rheostat switch, they self-adjust for proper brightness. They all use a removable plastic hood to put the light to sleep mode to save battery power. I've attached my hoods to the handgun holsters with a short bit of buckskin thong so that the hood comes off when I draw the gun but the hood will not be lost. Thus there is no need to turn anything on or off, just draw and shoot.

Blackbear I have 2 Bushnell Trophy red dot scopes 1 on the 450 marlin 0 problems works great even with max load 500grn Hornady bullets. Other one is on 30-30 no problem either. Had a Cabelas brand on my 44 mag ruger redhawk and it broke 2nd shot sent it back no problem put a tasco on it. Think I will get another bushnell for it.

I have a 50mm BSA and find it useless. The Dot moves when you move your head so your zero could be anything

I use and recommend the Ultra-dot. I have had an Ultra-dot on my S&W 500 Mag for over 5 years now. That is over 5000 rounds of heavy 500 Mag recoil. I am still using that same Ultra-dot today.

I have not found any other red-dot that has held up to the Ultra dot, I have shot out , Bushnell, Gilmore made by Leupold, Millet and even Aim point.
Now the Newer Aimpoint may hold up, I could not give you any information on them, for I have not used them. Another red-dot that comes to mind is the Ecotech, expensive, but I am told if you order the right one it will handle the heavy recoil. But my money goes to Ultra-dot.

I'v got a TruGlo red dot on my 444 Handi. It's taken over 160 rds with out problems. Paid 35.00 on sale at Scheels

and like it well enough I ordered 2 of the 2x30mm from the same maker. Hven't put them on anything yet, but if they work as well as the 1x30mm, they will be fine! They have a 2.5 dot size. They are $70.00 from Natchez. DP.

Good thing you bought 2 more, you are going to need them. I have see the 44 Mag blow out the red-dot in them.

I'll let you know if/when it ever lets go. The 444 has just a bit more back up to it than either one of the 44 mag rifles, so I shouldn't have to wait to long, eh? Have had or heard of poor performance with every brand, some more than others. Had a Leupold that went bad, got it fixed and no problem. Anything mechanical can break, Murphy's Law. That's why I take 2 guns when I hunt.

ok i ruger WILL not warranty any big bore handguns for me i broke every red dot on the market with a super redhawk the ONLY one was The Ultra dot that survived ALL the other gave up between sight in and 40 shots i was a former pin shooter and the snapping back into target under recoil was more than all would take the ultra survived! 100;s of shots

Got an Ultra Dot on my NEF 10gauge that I use for yotes. I shoot 3 1/2 in 00 buck thru it and it will rattle your teeth loose, but it works fine. Swapping it to my 45/70 for this deer season.

I like my Ultra Dot, but I think the best on the market are the Aimpoints. They are used by many servicemen and women and one model runs for like 100,000 hours on a battery. That is crazy! They are built super heavy duty, but the price is about 3X what the Ultra Dot is.

When I buy scopes for guns, I typically don't buy anything on the lower end of the scale, except for the rimfires, but this for the money, I have to say seems pretty decent. I have put 300 buck shot loads thru it, and 400+ BB lead heavy loads thru it and it has never once failed.

I've got a Leupold/Gilmore on my 45/70 Encore. They haven't made em in a frew years but they are still around.

Have over 400 of the 444 rounds thru a Handi with the TruGlo mounted and it still hits right where the dot is. Still happy with it. 2 of us used it to bust clay birds at 150 yards today, so POI hasn't moved. DP.
