Question on Westerfield (mossberg I think) 22 Bolt action

Picked up an old (50's or 60's vintage I think) Westernfield bold action tubular fed 22.  It has a solid rib that the tube is mounted to not the typical rings.  It came with a Mossberg 4X scope in nice condition and there is a Mossberg Peep mounted on it with an adjustable aperature but the front site is missing the little ball and hood.  I am sure the peep cannot be used without removing the scope.

Anyway I go it home and was cleaning it up and removed the feed tube (the one with the spring) and it has a spring and plunger sticking out the end about 4 inches.  There is still one up inside the tube but this one appears to be attached to the one in the tube.  It looks right and fits right just looks funny.  

I don't know that it is wrong (maybe used to shoot 22 shorts?) I am just use to the modern tube feeds where the entire spring and plunger is up in the tube.

Is anyone familiar with the is type of setup and is it correct?

Don :  I have seen it on the older rifle in question but in a 22 lr. I think if you will look at the action where the round works it way to the bolt you will see it isnt a straight line it has a curve in it and the spring sticking out of the tube is to allow it to follow the curve with the round.    JIM

thanks for the quick response.  This one will shoot 22 S-L-LR.  It is in nice shape and just kinda caught my eye with the scope and peep site on it.  Just need to hunt down a replacement front site and it will be complete.

Probably doesn't have any value other than it is just a solid, nice old 22.  Not sure if I am gonna keep it or not but it had been sittin at the dealers for months now as people always want the newest and it just needed a home... :wink:
