1911 Rear Sight

This may be  the best place for this:

I will be getting a Jonathan Arthur Ciener 22LR Conversion Unit for my M-9 pistol and the maker of the kit states that "The dovetail slot in the slide is the same size as the standard 1911A1 slot so any adjustable sights made for the 1911A1 will fit"

the slide comes with a drift adjustable type sight but I want to put an adjustable sight on it. looking around I see quite a few makers of the rear sights. are all the dovetail slots the same?

Where is the cheapest place to buy one new or used?

What style should I be looking at?  I intend to do paper punching and small game hunting.

any advice on installing the rear  sight? I do not have a rear sight adjustment tool.

rickyp - yep, you're right - there are a whole bunch of sight makers for 1911s and no, the dovetails are not all the same. 

You will need a rear sight with a dovetail that "replaces standard 1911A1 rear sights", on slides that have not been modified to take sights with larger dovetail bases.

Check one of our sponsors, Mid-South Supply for their offerings of rear sights and also check Brownells to see what they have.  A set of used sights or a used rear sight is usually a gunshop or gun show item. 

Style - up to you and depending on how serious a paper slayer and bunny popper you are.  I get a pretty clear sight picture with a fixed rear Nowak style sight and blade front.  You can get fully adjustable sights if you wish.

Rear sight adjustment tool???  Do you mean a hammer and a drift punch?  Most non-adjustable rear sights simply drift into position and you adjust them for windage with a hammer and punch. 

Some adjustable sights may require fitting but the base part of the sight will drift into position in the same manner as the non-adjustables and then you make minor corrections with the adjustment capability of the sight.

Rickyp    A word of caution before you get too far down the road.   There are adjustable rear sights that fit in a standard Government model dovetail, but they tend to sit high on the slide and require installation of a higher front sight as well.   If the conversion you are buying has a dovetailed front sight, you can buy a sight set with matching front and rear sights.  If the conversion has a fixed front sight you would have to take it to a gunsmith to remove the front sight and mill a dovetail for installation of a new higher front sight.

There probably are adjustable rear sights that can make use of your existing front sight but they require not only a wider dovetail, but additional milling of the top of your slide.

rbwillnj - good point and thanks, I forgot about fixed front sights.  He might need to look at the MMC line of sights - smaller adjustable rears that work with the fixed front sight.  Mikey.

Here is the sight measurements from Connor to Connor Wide for the dove tail  (bottom of the triangle and front to back of the slide) is 0.3195"
The sight is 0.5995" wide (accursed the slide)
and it is 0.2840" high from bottom of the sight to the top of the sight

I know the measurements are somewhat crude but hopefully your guys will get the idea and be able to tell me what sight may fit the dove tail

I do believe the cheapest and best way to get an adjustable sight is to buy the Ciener "Platinum" conversion. It comes with a Millet adjustable rear sight. $249.
