I know there would be trade offs with this, easy to maneuver but shorter range etc. but I was wondering about the noise difference in a 20 inch barrel. Is it pretty severe or not really noticable??

The noise difference is very noticeable, not because of the length, but the porting. I have permission to hunt a farm, and have stood in the same spot for several years. When I fired the katahdin, one of the neighbors was convinced I was on their property because the shot was so loud.

All the reading I find talks of them being ported but I found a 20" katahdin 209x50 on gunbroker that does not appear to be ported. item 105286683 if you wanna look and see. I know ported is loud that is why I wondered about this. Would make an awesome stand/brush gun ;) if it's not ported.

The new 20" Katahdins (prohunter style) are not ported and stainless steel. The old katahdin barrels were 18.5" barrels were ported & blued . I have a katahdin 45-70 gov't in the pro hunter style (20" & stainless) and it will replace my 35 whelen barrel this year as my hunting rig.
