Bowfishing!!!
« on: July 18, 2008, 03:05:58 PM »
Sure, heated debates on religion and politics is fun on here, but guys, let me tell you bowfishing is a lot more fun!  Went for the first time this afternoon...  My boss loaned me an old recurve and I bought the stuff to deck 'er out for fishing.  I am happy to say, I stuck two carp!!  Not a ton, but not bad for a compound bow guy.  I was amazed to see, shooting instinctively with a bow is a lot like shotgunning...don't think, just shoot.  Somehow your brain and body figures out everything on their own...you just pull back and let 'er go while concentrating on the target.
Going in the early AM again and then home to work on some Whelen loads...

I haven't been bowfishing yet, but agree on the instinctive/natural shooting style. After trying I found I enjoyed it more than shooting with sights. I have since removed all sights from my bows.

I got addicted to it several years ago.  I LOVE it....but haven't been in almost 10 years.  I used an old Ben Pearson compound and the attachments that lets you mount a reel on it.  I used a Zebco 888 with 60pound test line on it.  No sights either, it was more fun that way.

I shot quite a few carp, buffalo, soft shell turtles, and needle-nose gar.

If you haven't been out at night yet, I suggest you give that a try.  2 guys in a john boat with a spotlight can have HOURS of fun and shooting.

I remember one night my buddy and I were out at Steelhouse Hollow lake near Killeen.  I saw a big swirl on one side of the boat, and looked over the other side and saw the body of what must have been an 80+ pound yellow cat that was up in the shallows feeding.  Scared the HELL out of me, because we were in water maybe 3 1/2 to 4 foot deep.

On another night, we got up in a slough that was surrounded by tree branches hanging out in the water.  We looked around and noticed 5 snakes on the limbs withiin 20 yards of us.  We didn't stick around to see if they were moccasins or plain old water snakes.

I also shot at a big alligator gar once, but bounced the arrow off his head. I swear he HAD to have been almost 6 foot long.

HAVE FUN!
