Now if I can get my 25-06 close to this I'll be a happy camper.
Heading out this afternoon to try my first attempt at calling in a coyote.

That is a nice group , what twist is your rifle 1-9 or 1-12 ? I am using Varget w/ 55 gr. V-Max's with good success but I have some IMR 3031 that I would like to try. TF

Thats a good group for 200 yds. Plenty good for coyotes. Good luck on the calling. I'm going to start that too. Dave

Thanks guys.
TF: My rifle is 1 in 9 twist .Just got it brand new in January.(Ultra Varmint)
Finally the weather is starting to warm up a little out here(if you call highs
of 35 farenheit warm) and I'm able to get out more and do some shooting.
Nothing came to my calls today except several ravens and a magpie.
Still a s***load of snow, was sinking up to my knees in places. Gonna
sleep good tonight

That's great shooting togojeff. Get some snowshoes for coyote hunting this time of year. There is a lot of snow on the ground in Millinocket Maine this year, the most in many years and it has been cold as well. Even more snow north of there in "The County" (Aroostook County). "Mud season" this year should be a doozey.
This has always been my favorite time to hunt coyotes up north. The temperatures are above zero, even at night, and walking through the woods to coyote setups on snowshoes is enjoyable, slow and quiet, much to see. The maple sugaring is in full swing now and the living is great, except they are thinking there may be snow left in the "snow bank" in town until perhaps July this year!!! For those of you from warmer climates or places that "Global Warming" really exists (
LOL !!!) a snow bank is where the snow is piled after being removed from town streets and roads with large bucket loaders and BIG dump trucks. After the first couple of snow storms and the roads have been plowed a few times there is no place left to push the snow so it has to be trucked away to make room to plow again. In front of my buddies house in Millinocket the straight up sheer snow bank is about 8' high where the bucket loaders have come by and removed the snow. The snow bank this year resembles a large hill or more correctly a small mountain!!! It is packed solid and the trucks drive/back up it to drop their loads...<><....

Andy,
You describe what seems to be a true winter wonderland. I would think all that snow would become monotonous for locals, but perhaps its just a way of life. Non-the-less, I think it would be beautiful.
A few years ago I did some camping in northern Vermont while touring on the motorcycle. One of the most scenic parts of the trip was crossing New Hampshire and doing some scenic riding in Maine. While in Maine I saw several roads that were posted with signs that stated "This road not maintained during winter". Not something we usually see down here in the Mid-Atlantic. The scenery was wonderful.
I was also fortunate to see the first and only Moose I've ever seen in the wild. He was grazing in a field (never realized that they "break" their front knees in an effort to reach the grass
). I was able to position the cycle in such a fashion to be able to take a picture of him behind the bike. In just a few minutes there were many sightseers all along the roadside snapping photo's. A nice young mother from Maine asked if I would allow her to photograph her young daughter sitting on the bike with the Moose in the background. It turned out to be quite an event.
Thanks for sharing.

I am sure that young family from Maine treasures that photo of their daughter on the bike with the moose in the background, and it is thanks to your kindness. It just goes to show you, "Flatlanders" like you (and I), those from "away" dontchaknow (said as one word) can be pretty nice sometimes.
If I can manage it some day I will post a picture of my wife in her kayak flyfishing at Mountaintop Pond in KI (Katahdin Ironworks) in Maine. She caught her first native trout that day after we carried her kayak in at least 1/4 to 1/2 mile through the woods to the pond (no roads to it). In the background on the shore is a young bull moose looking at her...I think it's a great picture....<><....

Good report, I too recently acquired a 1 in 9 .223 Ultra Varmint and my selection of bullets came this past Friday.. Now I just have to get moving on punching up some loads! Weather here is high 60's - so I have few excuses.

Well I finally got a yote with the .223 ultra varmint. 175 yds and stopped him dead in his tracks.
Funny thing is I was heading out to shoot some nuisance beaver when I came across this canine.
Had a couple of shots at beaver at 75 yards and missed both.
Haven't hardly shot the ultra or the handi for a couple of months since I am now into
my newest interest: handguns
Fall is coming quick though and I have been drawn for Elk. A little bit much for my 25-06
so I'm gonna have to work up some loads in my 30-06 pretty soon.

Way to go, Togo!
Thanks for the pic of your yote. Sounds like you bullet selection did a number on him.
I understand not shooting certain guns for a while, I haven't been able to lay down my old recurve for a couple of months.
I'd like to hear how your 30-06 load development goes, as I've got one myself.
Thanks again!
GOOD SHOOTING!
