Loads for Ruger New Model Blackhawk in 45 Colt?
« on: July 22, 2008, 10:31:37 AM »
Hey guys, I just recently acquired a New model blackhawk in 45 colt.  The gun was made in 1997.  I have reloaded for a 45 acp for a while now, but was needing some information from you guys.  I have some Hodgdon universal powder already and was gonna use it to load up some 250 gr. lead bullets pretty lightly just to shoot at cans.  I also just bought some Hodgdon 4227 for it to shoot my 250 gr. xtp and other bullets at +p levels.  What are some of ya'lls favorite loads in the 250 gr. range maybe some 300's too.  Just how stout of loads can the blackhawk withstand.  I'm needing some advice from you who are experienced with this gun and caliber.  Also the barrel is 4 5/8 long.  I know this will cut down on velocity so if any of you have one of these in this barrel length could you tell me about what speed you are getting with your favorite loads that you use for hunting, because I plan on hunting with it this year.  Thanks guys for all the help.

Maybe try a seacrh or ask this in the reloading section here at the forum.

I strongly reccomend the appropriate section of the Hodgdon reloading manual.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt   ;)    I know that may sound like a side step, and it is, but for many good reasons that I think most here will agree with.

Ruger's New Model Blackhawk is a very stout handgun, and is pretty much ideal for the handgun hunter. In 45 Colt it will take very heavy loads, but if you're hunting deer, a 250-grain cast SWC around 1,000 fps is plenty. I've had good luck with Unique and HS-6 for moderate loads, and H110 or WW-296 for the real barn burners. Try handloads.com for a good rundown of what's possible with the 45 Colt.

Like was said this is a fourm for discussing single action guns not loads. there is a handloading fourm that you can post on and will get some answers to your questions.
