Anyone with 22-250 Ultra Varmint?
« on: July 10, 2008, 10:56:53 AM »
Purchased a thumb hole ultra varmint in 22-250.  I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with them?  Any problems with this particular setup?  I've read through the FAQ and have a good idea of what to expect (well maybe), but I was wanting to hear input from those of you that have this particular model and caliber.

I guess what it comes down to its a cheap gun no doubt, but does it have the accuracy needed to have confidence in a single shot rifle?

Mine has the old style Tupperwear stocks but other than that its the same rifle , mine will shoot 11/2" or less @ 100 with anything that I feed it ,

I do need to spend some more time with the loads and I know it will be down to 3/4" with out much work , just been too busy with other rifles to put the work in .  ;D

My standard .22-250 Handi is very accurate.  I'm still learning long range trajectories.  The Brown Truck brought 5 boxes of ammo today, so I can get back into it in the morning.  I don't get many second shots at varmints except at very long range when they're in the open and confused, not knowing where the bullet came from.  Then, I usually have plently of time to load the second shot if needed.

At this point, I'm thinking the longer 55 gr. V-Max is working best for my terrain and wind conditions.

Coyote season opens here on the 15th.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

Thanks for the boost in confidence guys.  If nothing else I think this will be a fun project gun and there sure is enough information in the FAQ's to guide me down the right road.  At the price I paid I'm not going to be too terribly upset if it requires a little tweaking out of the box.

I've reloaded for the 220 swift and 223 and had very good luck with the V-max bullets (specifically the 55's).  A coworker of mine has slayed a few vermin with some of my handloads and he was quite impressed with the results.  That said this time around for the 22-250 I'm going to try out the CT 55 grain ballistic tip and some 52 grain A-max bullets.  See which one the gun likes better.  Ordered some nosler custom brass and will pick up a pound of H380 to give it a go.  I'll try the gun out with a cheap 10X scope I have to see how well it does at the 100yd, then make my decision from there how much I'm going to sink into optics.  I have my eye on the Vortex Viper 6.5-20 with BDC reticle.....users have reported its about on par with leupolds vari-x III and a lower cost.

No dogs around here, have to go one state to the west to get that done.  But we have plenty of crows in the cornfields to take a shot at. And your usual foxes, yotes, squirrels etc.   ;D

Thanks for the welcome!  I'm glad I came across the forum, there is a wealth of knowledge here!

Finally received my .22-250.  I have accumulated some parts to do various "tricks" and such that were described in the FAQ section....unfortunately, it appears I might not have to touch a thing.

Trigger pull is excellent, no creep and breaks very clean.  This is a bit of relief...and yet not because I like tinkering with stuff, but there is no reason to on this one.

Scope mount screws came out without a problem...well, maybe this is a problem because there was no thread locker on the threads whatsoever.  I will use blue or purple loctite if I can find my tube of it.

Fore end is mounted solid, removing the screw it stays in place but can be removed with a little pulling.  I may put a little grease on the hinge part/spacer as it does drag a bit, but nothing terrible.  I may make a pillar and bed it in but I will wait until I can make it out to the range and actually break it in and test it for accuracy.

Barrel locks up solid, no side to side play.  I do have a stiffer spring I found for the latch, but once again I'll hold off until inital testing.

Well other than that nothing to report.  I'll have to see how extraction is on the gun once I get to the range.  I've cleaned the bore and use TM oil in the bore until I make it to the range, boeshield on the outside of the gun.  I was very impressed with the quality of the gun for such a low price.  The barrels are left with a somewhat rough surface from machining, but at this price range that is a very minor point.  Once I get optics mounted up and make it to the range I'll report anymore findings.  Hopefully that will be next week when I start my forced vacation (plant shuts down for one week a year, we are forced to use our vacation for it).

I did contact customer service via email to inquire about fitting different barrels and trigger work.....they told me no problem and to leave a note to fix the trigger if it was problematic.  I'm thinking of having a 16 gauge barrel fitted to this gun with its own fore end mounted, then I can take it out hunting and just switch barrel assemblies for whatever I'm after.

All in all....very happy camper with the ultra varmint rifle.   ;D

I've been looking at the same set-up, but the forestock is a way lighter color than the butt stock. ???   Someone must have been pretty hung over not to have noticed the difference, I'm really suprised it left the factory mismatched that bad.  Haven't been able to talk them into switching stocks around at the store yet. :P  Still working on that. ;)   DP.
