45 LC suggestions?

I'm trying to cook up a load for my 45 LC Ruger BH 5.5" that is over factory loads but not the hot rodded Ruger only loads.

I'm trying for a 250 cast RNFP at or arround 950 fps for an all aroung hunting load, and I'm using Titegroup.

According to my manual 6.2gr is max standard @ 881 fps standard load for 250 gr cast. I dont have hotter info on that bullet.
But the manual shows 8.0 gr of Titegroup as minimum Ruger only for a 250gr XTP.

I want to to try 7.0 gr of Titegroup with cast 250gr RNFP....Any suggetsions or loading info on this bullet at this load??

Use for hunting deer and wild hogs..

You won't have any problems at all with 7.0g of Titegroup.  I'm using that load under some 300g Lazercast and 315g Keith SWC from Mt Baldy in my Blackhawk and my Redhawk.  The Keith shoots better out of both.  DP.

Minimum charges in handguns are most important with jacketed bullets.  Reduce the charge too much and you might stick a jacketed bullet in the barrel.  Lead bullets are not as critical and can take lighter charges without sticking.  But if you go TOO low.......

I know its not too light, it between max factory and Ruger only loads. I havn't shot it through a chrony yet, and was woundering if in body has. I'm looking for inbetween 950 & 1000 fps. I know it will kill deer, and that is my primary concern, but run into hogs from time to time and woundering how it would do...I know I can go much heavier, but I do not care for more recoil....

I would estimate that 7.0 grains might get you to 950-1000 fps or so.  While 6.2 grains is maximum for a "normal" .45LC, your Ruger should be fine at 7.0 grains based on the Ruger-level data Hodgdon lists for the 250XTP.  My biggest concern is the bullet - a round nosed bullet is poor for hunting.  If the flat point is large, at least half the bullet diameter, then okay, otherwise I'd opt for a bullet with a wide flat point like a SWC.

Gene R, 6.5 grs. of Titegroup gives me 850 fps. out of my 5.5" Bisley. 7.0 should get you real close to the velocity you want. You might also want to try the 270 gr. SAA bullet from Montana Bullet Works. 13.0 grs. of HS-6 gives 1000 fps, so 12 grs. should give you the velocity you want with a much better bullet than the 250 RNFP. I mainly use Titegroup for my standard pressure loads (and it works great). Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, that was exactly the information I was looking for. I can always shoot those while hikeing or plinking and get a better bullet for hunting. Hopefully they will shoot close to the same POA. and I can switch back and fourth, I ordered 1000 of those things. With 3 of us shooting 45 LC that shouldn't take long to use up.

I think you'll like this load. You can always load a few at 7.3 grains or so for a little more power, but the 7 grain Titegroup load should work well.

South Carolina's deer season starts in 3 weeks, Aug 15th.

I've got two stands set up with 50 yard and under shots, should be no problem with my 45 BH. I've only taken 2 deer and about 5 hogs with a handgun, all were in the last year and a half. I'm hopeing to do a little better this year.

The new load of 7.0gr of titegroup with both cast 250 gr RNFP and 255gr SWC-GC both shoot about 2" groups at 45 yards with iron sites. I think a little better, but for be thats some of my best groups. Still got 3 weeks to practice, and then 4.5 months to hunt.

I have a pair of S&W Model 25's (6 and 8 inch) and a Dan Wesson (8 inch) in 45 Long Colt.
My standard plinking, bowling pin and target loading is a cast 255 grain SWC over 8 grains of Red Dot.
I have been shooting this load for 20 years in the S&W's and 5 years in the Dan Wesson with zero problems.
