Ruger Montado chamber sizes?
« on: July 18, 2008, 06:50:55 AM »
I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the chamber sizes are coming through at on the new Montados? I am tossing around the idea of ordering one but not if its going to show up with oversize chambers. Thanks

I have a Montado, and the chambers seem to measure about .4515.  If anything, a tad undersized, which Ruger is know for.  Many people send the cylinders out ot be opened up to .4525 for use with cast bullets.

Maybe I am using the wrong terminology? The dimensions you gentlemen are providing are what I would call "throat" dimensions. I am wondering about the diameter that surrounds the brass shell. I have an older blackhawk that measures around .488. When I fire this gun the brass expands making it harder to re-size when reloading and it also wastes energy expanding the case rather than propelling the bullet forward. My Accusport bisley measures .4815, which I find acceptable. John Linebaugh cuts his chambers to .480 and I assume Dave Clements is in the same ballpark. I am wondering if Accusport orders their chambers “custom small” from Ruger or if .4815 is the new Ruger norm. If somebody could measure a Montado I would appreciate it. This is more of mental hang up with me, I can't sleep at night knowing my chambers are sloppy loose. Thanks, Jim

Yankee, the newer Ruger's have tighter tolerances than the old ones did.  I think you will find the chambers to be acceptable.  Although I have not measured my 'New Vaquero', the brass is only moderately expanded when fired.  I don't believe that will be an issue on the new Rugers.  I have a 'half' of a Montado.  I've installed a SBH hammer into my 4 5/8" bbl SS .45.  Wish I had the short barrel but maybe next time.  44 Man.
