Don, There is hog hunting in Virginia and it is darn near free. Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge has a hunt at the beginning of October. It is a lottery hunt, but after Wednesday of hunt week, it is possible to get in as a standby. They do a standby hunt for unused spots each day, but by Wednesday the crowd has thinned out. They also hunt the same week at False Cape State Park, which is next door. Go to
www.backbay.fws.gov to see times and rules. You can apply online, but you have to apply by 4 September.
The part that you may not like is that it is a shotgun and archery hunt, with no rifles allowed. I have been there and some areas have visibility of hundreds of yards and others, inches. Using a shotgun has not seemed that much of a limiting factor to me. I go by the motto that the worst day hunting beats the best day working. :-D
