riflescope with longer eye relief for a .300
« on: July 27, 2008, 01:58:35 AM »
I got a .300 Wby mag. and i need a scope with more than the usual 3-3.5" of eye relief.
I get whacked by my current scope too often for my liking, it might be bad shooting habits.

Several Leupold scopes can do a good job for you. Several Zeiss Conquest scopes have a longer eye relief. I oredered a Leupold VX2 3x9 for the same reason but my rifle is a 30-06. Eye relief that's too short is not good for your best shooting because you're not wanting to get punched in the eye.

You can also purchase some extension rings that will allow you to mount the scope farther from your eye.

The Nikon Omega has a constant 5" of eye relief and 92% light transmission, a nice light scope @ 13.7oz for about $200.

omega? new line by nikon is it? i had a pro-staff but i must send it in to be fixed, has a blurred image that i can't correct.
Leupold and Zeiss especially are well out of my price limits.
I have good faith in Bushnell, but the only ones i found with adequate eye relief were the Banner line and i don't know how long that lower line would handle to a magnum.

The relatively new Omega line is also available for slug guns which in 12ga have more recoil than a lot of magnum rifle chamberings, read the reviews, the difference in all of them is the reticle, the shotgun BDC-200 is configured for slug trajectories as is the ML BDC-250 for 250gr sabot trajectories w/150gr pellet charges. I have the BDC-250 version on a new stainless 45-70 Ultra and the Nikoplex version on a 338 Win mag Tikka T3 Lite, neither have been to the range yet tho. Mac11700 used his BDC-250 on a 45-70 Optima Elite shooting the 325gr, 2050fps Leverevolution ammo which worked well out to 200yds.

I would have to second quickdtoo's suggestion.  The Nikon Omega and Slughunter lines of riflescopes carry a full 5 inches of eye relief and are built to take the recoil of slug guns and muzzle loaders.

You do lose some field of view (because of the longer eye relief), but I would rather lose that, than get whacked in the eye :o

I've seen these scopes normally priced around $250.00 new.  The link for midsouth is an excellent price and I've also seen them on ebay (with a standard Nikonplex reticle) for around $180.00 from time to time.

Had the same problem with my savage muzzleloader. I decided on the Bush 3200 SA 3x10x50 (SA= short action)  under 300 bucks.

comes down to what i can find locally too.
I'll look into the nikons, and more bushnells,
don't know if anyone here is familiar with binoculars.com, its like every other online store, but they got a pretty wide selection and their warehouse is actually located within my city, so i can easily look around for something i like(and in stock) and drive a bit to pick it up.

There are several Bushnell Banners that have 4"-6" of eye relief, I have a couple of them, they're good scopes for the money if you're on a limited budget.

Going by the recoil chart below, it doesn't have substantial recoil, so it should be fine. They're used on slug and turkey guns with no problems, they can have over twice the recoil of the 300Wby mag.
