So, my forgetful mind has left me in a conundrum. When I did my shopping today, I remembered to pick up bullets... but I forgot to get myself large pistol primers. I was hoping to take some younger cousins shooting tomorrow, but my window of opportunity to get those primers before then is gone.
So - I have some Winchester large rifle magnum primers - is there a safe way to modify the load to use the magnum primers instead of the Winchester large pistol primers I would have been using otherwise?
I have already been using 9 grains of Unique under 200 grain Hornady XTP bullets, and was going to try the published starting load of 6.6 grains of Unique under 300 grain XTPs. If it makes much of a difference, the firearm I'd be using is an H&R Survival Shotgun .410/45LC.
As always, I want to err on the side of safety, and if it means I have to use what I have left of my pistol primers (I do have a few left) and not do as much shooting, so be it, but if there is a safe load, I'd like to have all my brass loaded up, and ready to go.
While I have your attention, I'm also wondering - I've had a lot of success with my starting loads, but heavier loads always intrigue me too - would you only load the H&R Survival gun up to standard pistol levels, or is it common knowledge that the H&R can handle something closer to Ruger loads? I'm going to try emailing H&R about that, but if anyone else knows anything, I'm interested in knowing too.
Thanks as usual.
