45 Colt primer help
« on: July 25, 2008, 12:44:41 PM »
So, my forgetful mind has left me in a conundrum.  When I did my shopping today, I remembered to pick up bullets... but I forgot to get myself large pistol primers.  I was hoping to take some younger cousins shooting tomorrow, but my window of opportunity to get those primers before then is gone.

So - I have some Winchester large rifle magnum primers - is there a safe way to modify the load to use the magnum primers instead of the Winchester large pistol primers I would have been using otherwise?

I have already been using 9 grains of Unique under 200 grain Hornady XTP bullets, and was going to try the published starting load of 6.6 grains of Unique under 300 grain XTPs.  If it makes much of a difference, the firearm I'd be using is an H&R Survival Shotgun .410/45LC.

As always, I want to err on the side of safety, and if it means I have to use what I have left of my pistol primers (I do have a few left) and not do as much shooting, so be it, but if there is a safe load, I'd like to have all my brass loaded up, and ready to go.

While I have your attention, I'm also wondering - I've had a lot of success with my starting loads, but heavier loads always intrigue me too - would you only load the H&R Survival gun up to standard pistol levels, or is it common knowledge that the H&R can handle something closer to Ruger loads?  I'm going to try emailing H&R about that, but if anyone else knows anything, I'm interested in knowing too.

Thanks as usual.

Edited for clarity

Hmm... and one more question - anyone have an email address for H&R so I can ask them about reloading levels?  I can't seem to find one on their site... and I'm usually at work during normal operating hours, so I don't know if phoning them is much of an option.

EDIT: I found their email in one of the H&R FAQs on GBO - thanks to the people who put them together.

The WInchester Large Pistol primers are actualy dual purpose magnum/regular loads.  So what you have is what you get for Winchester Large Pistol primers.  As long as you are starting at the minimum load and working up you should be just fine.

Interesting... well, thanks for the reply, I appreciate it... so, I'm assuming that if I was ever in a bind the opposite way, and wanted to reload my .338 win mag, I could use those Winchester large pistol primers instead of my Winchester magnum rifle primers?

Actually, rereading my first message, maybe I wasn't clear - the primers I DO have are Winchester "large rifle for rifle magnum loads" primers.  Does that change anything, or does what you said still stand?

Thanks,
Bryan

NO NO NO - Do NOT mix these , Aside from having diffrent size dimensions they also have diffrent burn temps which will change pressures drastically !!!!!

Well, that settles it then - thanks Richard.  Always helps with I'm giving clear information when I'm asking for advice, eh?  That's another lesson for me to tuck away for next time - one that could have been a lot more painful!  If I don't have enough pistol primers left, maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet, and buy some factory ammo on my way to where I'm headed tomorrow.

"large rifle for rifle magnum loads" primers.

Ahhhhhhhh, that makes a world of difference then.  As has been noted, you do not want use Magnum RIFLE primers, especially for this round.
