I hate to do it but I have to add, I have posted before, what is considered a "good well paying job" where I live is a job for which you have no qualifications, from which you can't be fired, and which pays you about 4 times what you're worth. Sad but true.
The American labour force is gonna have to realize the good old days of going to work in a factory right out of highschool (or before), making $25.00/hr with a sack full of bennies when the same job can be done overseas for $5.00/day with a company house and a company clinic provided ain't never coming back. No matter what those pols promise you.

Actually, I have heard that Coleman, the big camping company, is now starting to produce goods in the USA again.  Seems like the cost of shipping is offsetting the cheap labor found internationally.  I would expect we will be seeing more of this as fuel prices rise.

Jim
Wow that is a great point I never thought of. With the rising cost of fuel it might make it cheaper to make things here. Dale

HMMMMMMM Jim, we have a Coleman company that produces camping equipment about 30 miles away in Springfield MN. I'm kinda wondering why they have pretty much shut down the plant and layed most of the employees off if what you have "heard" is true? They were a pretty good customer of mine and I kinda think I have an inside slant on this.

Dixiedude,

Right on brother!

A.  No one here is listening and they would rather pay out the nose to foriegn(often times hostile) countries for their energy needs.

B. They havent made time to checkout www.pickensplan.com

Maybe you should start a new thread and call it "WAKE UP PEOPLE OPEC SHOULD NOT RULE US!" or "SCREW THE MIDDLE EAST" Maybe you might get more attention.

Second thought, lets just talk about drilling off the continental shelf and in 10 years, maybe the price of a gallon of gas will go down!

I was talking to our buyer about a month ago; we have a HUGE coleman account.  He talked to the Coleman guys; he knows most of 'em since he's been dealing with them for over 20years.  They told him that they have STARTED producing some of their products in the US due to shipping costs.  Heck, for all I know, it could be just sleeping bag zippers, but they said they have brought back some production to our shores.

DixieDude and others, I think it's great that some jobs are coming home.  Maybe the gas price is a blessing in disguise --reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw in Okla, "Lord, please let there be another oil boom. I promise not to piss this one away."  You union types might want to keep that in mind.  I noticed you just had to say "union" job.  Why does it have to be a union job? Can't a man come to work and give an honest day's work without paying someone to tell him how much to do?  Or how little.  Anyway, what's gonna happen when some drooler shows up late for work one too many times, or drunk, or calls in sick and is seen at the ball game, etc and gets fired and your shop steward sez, "hit the bricks" or "slow down" or "sabotage"?  (you can tell this ain't my first rodeo) and you come to work and find the gates locked and some mexican doing your job for half the pay and doing as good a job as you do?  Is your union gonna sign your paycheck?  :D

I personally am not union.  I am an engineer.  However the utility I work for is union, so are most utilities.  These jobs with power and gas companies will more than likely be mostly union.  The turbine blades are manufactured by airplane companies.  So most of the turbines mfg. jobs will be good paying jobs.  The compressors that would need to be installed at gas stations will be manufactured by an automotive company.  We are talking good jobs.

It will take 5-10 years to convert the fleet vehicles to natural gas.  (Approximately 20-25% of vehicles are in fleets of 25 or more).  One large compressor can serve 25 vehicles daily with complete fill ups.  The complete large compressor station with back up bank of CNG bottles can fit on a flatbed tractor trailer.  Honda sells a natural gas car with a home compressor that is about the size of a water heater.  It can refuel the car overnight, slow fill.

Windmills are large slow movers to avoid killing birds.  They cost a little more than natural gas or coal boilers to produce electricy.  Power companies would need a tax break to install them.  Fleets will need tax breaks or mandates to install the natural gas filling stations.  We order Cheverolet trucks from GM already set up for natural gas at about the same cost as gasoline.  The high pressure tank costs more, but a natural gas vehicle doesn't need a catilytic converter or polution control.  Natural gas is CH4 and burns with oxygen to produce one CO2 molecule and two water molecules, the cleanest and lowest carbon emission fossil fuel.  The infrastructure for natural gas vehicles is already in place, just the compressors would have to be installed at the fleet yards or at gas stations or both.

These things can be done right now and not in 20-50 years.  Feds have to vote for the tax credits and or mandates.  Later after the first phase of 5-10 years getting the fleets off gasoline or diesel, then we can give tax credits to build algae oil greenhouses to replace oil.  If every car in America burned algae oil, the greenhouses to manufacture the algae oil would cover an area the size of Maryland.  But if 25-40% are already burning natural gas, then we wouldn't have to build so many greenhouses.  Algae is a plant that takes carbon dioxide out of the air, but you put it back when you burn the fuel, so it is carbon neutral.  Natural gas produces about 2/3 less carbon dioxide than gasoline or diesel, so it would also help with less carbon emmissions.

Another phase is to build solar power plants in the southwest to complement the wind from the plains states and around the coasts.  Nuclear being last could replace the coal plants in which coal could be used to make synthetic fuel in the distant future.

All of this can be done in phases, starting with Picken's plan.  We can eventually be energy independent.  But we have to do it all, not just parts and bits and pieces.

Windmills, natural gas vehicles, algae, solar, and nuclear.  All must start now.

Something I was also thinking, why would any Muslim nation want nuclear power?  They have more sunlight than us, they should be building large solar plants.  Their oil will eventually run out, so they will need a lot of electricity in the future.  They could also build saltwater greenhouses to grow algae for fuel too.  They just want the nuclear power for making nuclear weapons.

This whole mess is being helped along with the DNC wanting to embarass Bush.  In our country the president generally shoulder the balme for everything that goes wrong.  If the econmy sucks it is Bush economy.  We overlook the fact the Dumocrats took control two years ago and have sat on their butts.  They are more occupied with making Bush look bad than trying to do something to solve the problems we face.

Please Kalifornia, NY and AZ get rid of your senators and congressman.

I have to say I have not cared about poltics much until the past 16 years or so. The older I get the more I seem to care what direction our country is going. I don't quit know how to explain my feeling about the direction we are headed. I am a true American and believe in our country through and through. I believe our country is the gratest in the world. I am sure that we have members from other countries that they believe their country is the best. That is fine with me!!!!! You should be proud of your country. What I don't understand is we as a whole can't seem to get our sh+t together. We all know the cost of oil is killing us right now. Why can't our parties agree to disagree and make something happen as far as the cost of gas our cars and trucks? I am fed up!!!!!!! This past year has been the worst in my life as far as being able to feed my famly. Dale

  Dale;
The RIGHT thing to do for our country and it's people wouild be to institute a comprehensive, crash program to free us from any manipulation
  by oil-rich, despotic countries.
In the near term, we should drill best available areas, and build refineries, for the long term ..tax breaks and other encouragement methods to hasten nuclear,
wind , solar , coal shale, natural gas (again drilling) and any other feasible method of gaining our COMPLETE independence. These are all things that other countries have employed !

Whenever we find anybody, no matter who, dragging their feet from our energy independence by any of these means, they are obviously "in the tank" for
one of the lobbying groups !

ironglow, have you checked on the efficiency rating of energy by wind or solar? Wind is something like 17% efficiency and solar less. These with the current technology is not realistic. Should we continue to study? Yes of course.
We cannot drill our way out of this, because the Senators and Congressmen, of this country are not suffering as we are at the gas pump and grocery store.

I saw a news story which showed a town in Germany, I believe, where they have switched to solar and wind.  It seemed to be working.  We are behind on the curve.  Our elected officials are not wanting to solve the problem.  Why?  We can all come up with a reason or reasons which would fit.

Perhaps one of our problems is we think and the gov'ment thinks on a national level rather than a local and state level.  All problems have to be addressed on a one size fits all basis.  This is why some concrete jungle, cliff dweller comes up with what, to the rest of us, seems like some pretty bizarre ideas. Right now, we are trying to think up A solution that will solve the United State's energy problems.  Why can't it be regional? Solar in the S.W., tidal hydroelectric in the N.E. and so forth?  Also, rationing has to be looked at.  For once, I agree with Dee.  Why does every piece of restrictive legislation begin with: "YOU can't......." and the the next line reads: "This don't apply to US...."

Over the years, both parties have left their constituents.  It is like everyone is sliding left and with every move more and more are popped out of the end of a pipe.  The Rrpublican party is where the Southern Democrat party was years ago before they became the Democratic Socialist Party.

A third party would be good but it would have to build a constituency at the grassroots level before going national.  But then, we have third parties that no one supports or they tend to be far left.  The Federal Election Commission pretty much controls party access to elections in the US which means the RNC and DNC are the only clubs allowed.  Sounds like a communist dictatorship.
