2 Remington 700's - FL resize or Neck
« on: July 24, 2008, 08:07:52 AM »
My father and I both shoot Remington 700's in 7mm Rem Mag, both produced in the late 70's. Right now we both shoot green box Remington 150's. We're going to move into reloaded ammo and I'm about to order some Lee dies for my Rock Chucker (OMG!) Since this is the first bottle-neck case I'm reloading, what are the odd's that I could get away with neck sizing only for use in both rifles? Is this strictly a "try it and see" thing? Or will the chambers vary that much?

We've got plenty of brass, but I seriously doubt we'll always be able to keep it separated since we always hunt and shoot together.

Can't tell you unless you try, but odds are one of the rifles wont chamber the other ones brass.

Chamber differences might matter even if the rifles are so close in production year.

Use the Remingtons for one rifle and buy some Winchesters for the other.

I have two 243 Winchester and I sort the brass for each of them by manufacture.

Chances are the two shoulders will not line up. Good advise about using Win in one and Rem in the other. You could also try setting the shoulders back to the shortest of the two. Not the best solution but if you are in the field and someone forgets their ammo atleast they can take a shot.

Try it and see.  The load for the tightest chamber and make do with the other.  If you've been getting by with store bought ammo, you'll probably improve on both of them.

Question:  will once fired brass chamber interchangabley between the two rifles??  If so, you've prob got it made.

load for the tightest chamber and make do with the other.

That was my first thought but all the suggestions so far are good!

You can ask a million people and get a million answers but you're still not gonna be any closer to the correct answer to your question. The simple solution is to full length size all cases. As much as I like to neck size there really is nothing wrong with full length sizing and when you are loading for more than one rifle it's really the smart option.

But only by trying your fired ammo in both your rifles are you gonna know if neck sized ammo from both will fit back into both. It might it might not. My luck is that it seldom does but on rare occassions will.

Don't get hung up on neck sizing assuming it is magic and will reduce group size as it really might not. Besides for hunting ammo you got no real business neck sizing anyway as the main concern with your hunting ammo should be that EVERY round chambers and fires EVERY TIME. Sadly with neck sizing that really isn't a 100% guarantee.

Well DUH!   ::)  That's such an obvious answer I had to go back and see how I missed it!  The OP started out clear enough; FL or neck.  But in his post he said "what are the odd's that I could get away with neck sizing only for use in both rifles? Is this strictly a "try it and see" thing? Or will the chambers vary that much?  We've got plenty of brass, but I seriously doubt we'll always be able to keep it separated..."  And this must have got everybody into the "He wants to neck size" mode.  Double DUH!   :-[  I can't believe I missed that...   :-[ :-[ I need to retire, the old minds gone, I'm walking malpractice...  :-[ :-[ :-[  Souky, just FL resize and forget neck sizing.  You'll never know the difference.  You can always play around comparing end results between NS & FL resized rounds, etc., after you settle on a hunting load... I can't believe I missed that...  :'(

Catfish:  "I would recomand you get RCBS, Hornady or about any other brand of dies but Lee."

Why?   I have dies from every maker on the market and some that are long gone from the market.  My Lee dies load ammo just as good as any other, on average, none load any better.  So, I can't help but wonder why you would not reccommend Lee.   I mean, does the ammo not go boom?  Or do the bullets fall out? Are the dies just not shiney enough?   Or ....etc.?      ???

Lee dies work just as well as any other brand, maybe better.

I bought a used set of RCBS dies in 7mm rem mag this morning at the gun show. Looks like we'll be doing full length resize. I also bought a complete DPMS lower with a couple of magazines just in case this next election cycle goes tits up. I'll have to put that in the safe and knock out some of these reloading projects first.

See if the fired cases will interchange between guns - just chamber the fired rounds in each others guns. If you can chamber them then as long as you are not loading maximum or near maximum pressures you should be fine neck sizing. If you run into problems then set the die down a quarter turn each time until the brass fits in both guns again.
