I want to get a shotgun soon for turkey and other small game, but I also want to use it as a slug gun for deer and pigs. You can't shoot slugs out of a choked barrel, right? Do I have to buy a slug barrel too?

I want a TC encore and get the other barrels but decided I would rather have more shots for water fowl and doves.

Slugs: The choke to use is dependent on the type of slug that you are going to use. Fosters will shoot out of about anything, BUT, You are much better with something around cylinder bore, or open. A slug barrel is not totally necessary. One of my best barrels was a 28" full choke to about 95 yards with the bead. Saboted slugs are cylinder bore, or open only. Never shoot a sabot in anything else.

Turkeys on the other hand demand a tight pattern, the opposite of a slug. And even then you will find that different chokes like different loads. Some people like large shot and others #6. Full works for me but my best friend had an extra full choke made special for him.

You best bet is a removable choke system and but 2-3 shoke tubes for the gun. There is no one solution on this.

i WOULD RECOMMEND going with the REMINGTON 870 TURKEY, you get a 22" vent rem-choke barrel already with a screw in turkey tube, and a improved tube, which is ideal for slugs, you can pick up a saddle mount and scope the for turkey and deer, take off the mount for small game hunting, kinda short for waterfowl but depends on how much you duck hunt.
This will give you the most options for your money, if you have to shoot saboted slugs just pick-up a rifled choke tube.

I just used a Mossberg pump in 12 ga. 28"barrel ,used cyl choke for rem.slugs.Got fair range I tend to hunt close anyhow.Worked well for me hunting in Ohio,just change the choke for bird hunting etc,and u can get rifled barrels,I just never seen the necessity for one,don't even have sights on my barrel,shot a LOT of deer that way. Works for me,biggest thing whatever you have,Practice with it,know which slug works best in yours and what its limitations are.......
