found a surprise in my synthetic stock
« on: August 04, 2008, 05:25:58 AM »
I bought a 280 used w/synthetic stock.
I have my 45/70 barrel on the stock now and decided to put some weight in the stock.
Took the recoil pad off and low and behold there is a 1/2" square steel bar w/ heavy foam
holding it in place in the middle of the stock, didn't measure it but would guess about 10'' I am guessing this the store bought recoil suppressor i have heard about. ::)
took the foam out, cut the top of 16- 12ga. #4 shot shells and poured them in, put the foam back
gun almost balances inside the trigger guard.

I found the same steel? rod and foam insert in my synthetic stock.  I took it out to get rid of the weight.  It is a standard barrel .223 so the weight isn't needed.  A little muzzle heavy, but it swings well on a coyote.

I have never heard anyone say, this rod comes from the factory in the synthetic,
i just assumed some one added it.
Has anyone else found the square rod in a synthetic stock.

Yup, it's SOP for H&R to put them in the heavier recoil chamberings, my SS 30-06 had one in it, if it got into a factory 223, it was likely a factory error.

Actually it was bought new as a .243.  I didn't think I needed the weight there either.  Now it is a .223 probably 90% of the time and I don't want to change the balance when I go back to the .243 barrel.
