Ejector or extractors?
« on: July 21, 2008, 05:24:29 AM »
Has NEF/H&R eliminated ejectors on both rifles & shotguns? I recently purchased a CR 45LC and was disappointed to discover it came with an extractor in lieu of a ejector. I assumed that was because ejectors are not allowed in Cowboy Action events, but has this become a standard now for all NEF/H&R barrels?

Thanks,

I believe all the new manufacture barrels are extractor.  Some of the barrels fitted at the factory are still ejector, but out of older stock.  I, personnally, am going to convert all my ejector barrels to extractor.  You can change them either way if you look at the FAQs on this web page.  I just don't enjoy outfielding spent cases and wishing I had 3 hands, or trying to find them in weeds or snow.  I don't have a problem with the extractor wearing gloves, which we wear for all seasons except summer.  Here, on Michigans Upper Peninsula, Summer is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 5th.

Tim will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the change from ejector to extractor evolved from a cost savings in manufacture.

The last I heard, shotguns still have ejectors. I don't believe the move to extractors has anything to do with cowboy action shooting, it was because they had so many complaints with ejectors failing to eject with high pressure cartridges. There are lots of "fixes" in the fact section but when someone buys a new rifle they expect it to work without having to jerry-rig a "fix". And then too, surprising as it may seem, there are many, many owners of H&R/NEF rifles who have never heard of this website and quite a few who don't even have access to a computer. Opinions vary but for myself, I consider it an improvement. When hunting I like to be quiet and don't appreciate the CLANG of an ejector and would much rather have something which works 100% than something which "usually" works or which must be "fixed" to usually work. I have modified all of my older H&Rs to extractors. I do wish the new extractors provided a much higher lift as my modified ejectors do and there is no earthly reason they could not have been made to do so but they are what they are. Remington has some real engineers on staff and perhaps we'll see a simple redesign on that part.

All current production centerfire rifle barrels are extractor equipped, shotguns and rimfires appear to still be ejector equipped, although H&R originally intended to change them also, but no one has reported an extractor shotgun or rimfire yet. As Pete said, some older inventory accessory barrels may still have ejectors, some of the Superlights and slow movers like the 450M.

I won't get into the pros and cons of each, use the search feature and you'll find a ton on the topic which has been beat to death discussed numerous times before. Spend some time in the FAQs, you'll find you can learn a lot more reading there than you will asking questions. ;)

I hunt big game, sometimes dangerous game.  Dangerous game is always in the scenario, even when out shooting rabbits or grouse.  I don't want to try and fumble around with getting a case out when my fingers are cold.  I want that empty gone.  Brass is cheap compared to my life.  Otherwise I simply place my left hand over the breech as I open the gun and catch the empty.  All my NEF/H&Rs are ejectors, and I refuse to buy one with extractors.  I own several T/Cs but they mostly see range work, they seldom go hunting.  I've had trouble with two NEF/H&Rs not ejecting when bought.  Sent them both back to the factory, they fixed them and returned them working fine.  Have never had a failure to eject in the field.  The last one I bought I was looking for a 22-250.  Found a .223 ultra with ejectors.  Man at the gun counter told me that was the only one he had with ejectors, the latest shipment were all extractors.  I bought it simply because it had ejectors.  When I got it home it failed to eject every time.  Sent it in they fixed it.  I carried it all winter, shot foxes, coyotes, and beaver in the spring with it.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Last February I bought a new Handi rifle in 45/70.It was an extractor model.I like it.The opening and closing of the action is very smooth and quiet. As reloader I like not having to look for empty brass in the weeds.

Extractors are fine with me with the rifles but I still like the ejector on my older Pardner shotgun.  With the shotgun I'm not worried about being so quite but the few times I use a shotgun during deer season I can just open the breach a little, press down on the shell and then open the rest of the way.  No ejector noise at all.

I have a 45/70 and 204 with extractor (wish they were ejector) that clang of the ejector, comes right after
the boom of the rifle, little late to be quite. I have 17hmr,2-25-06,243,280 ejectors, the
17hmr is the only one that ever sticks a case(about half way out)
I have heard about stuck cases but i just like the ejector, want that case gone cause i have
one or two more between the fingers of my left hand ready to go in the barrel. ;D

I have a new 45-70 and love the extractor. My first experience with H&R goes back to 1970 or thereabouts. Took the rifle in 30-30 out and had a case stuck. That sort of ticked me off because it was only the second round fired. I didn't have a cleaning rod with me but did have my High Standard 9 shooter with some shot loads with me.
I can tell you for a fact that a 22 cal shot load held close to the muzzle of a Handi will eject a 30-30 case that is stuck.

My stainless '06 ejector sticks almost every second shot, clean or dirty.  That's with Federal Hi Shok ammo. It needs a Huntsman setup with a ram rod.  It is a real pain in the butt.  When I shoot it off the bench, I just automatically carry out a cleaning rod 'cause I know it is going to stick.  I'll be happy when all my Handis are extractor.

Hunting with it, I had better make sure that first shot does the job because the case will most likely stick.  Then I'd have to club the critter to death.

Pete, have you worked on the ejector/chamber? Polishing the ejector and housing and adding a BB in front of the spring works well. As a last resort, you can always use Fred's notch instead of a rod, or have someone convert it to a factory style extractor as shown in the FAQs.  ;)

Tim, Thanks for the information.  I'm just going to print the FAQ, pack it up with the barrel and send it off to Lyle McGregor, the gunsmith at Dick Williams Gun shop in Saginaw, MI.  Lyle is superb, in both work quality and reasonable cost. I'll let Lyle do the conversion.  I learned long ago to do the things I know how to, and pay a professional to do the things I don't know how to.  It's a lot cheaper that way rather than hiring the same guy to fix it after I mucked it up!

Rex6666 and I traded .45-70 barrels.  His exractor for my ejector.  It arrived yesterday and I put it together and sighted it in.  Now I'm a happy camper.  When I get the '06 done, they'll all be extractor.
So many range shooters whined and complained about having to pick up their empties.  NEF/H&R took a fine hunting rifle and turned it into a range gun.
I guess if I were in a big rush to get off a second shot I'd carry a repeater.  A .45-70 Guide Gun would be my choice.

Another thought crossed my mind.  Let's say I whacked a big brown bear at 80 yards and just pissed him off and he decided he was going to tear me up.........gee whiz, my ejector is stuck.  Oh my goodness!!

I have forty-four H&Rs, most are ejector rifles, few have had sticking brass, most never have, but I still  prefer extractors for the most part, in fact I just converted three ejectors to  modified factory style extractors.  ;)

Two of my barrels are extractors (44 Mag and 444). I am seriously considering converting the ejectors I have over to extractors.
