How is the Savage 93 Rear Sight Removed?

This is a 22 WMR with a rear sight that looks like it is a press fit. It has two little "ears" that are bent and locked into slots in the side of the barrel. Is this silver soldered or just a press fit?

The rear sight is dove tailed into the barrel. You need to use a nylon or brass drift punch and a hammer to drift the sight left or right. I usually drive mine all the way out and then tap it back in with some gun oil on it. This one time removal will make range adjustments easier.

I am not a big fan of the factory rear sight on the Savage. If you want to use iron sights, consider upgrading them for just a few buck.

These will keep the gun set up much like stock, but will greatly improve the adjustability and sight picture.

I do thank you for your response. This sight is different than what you describe. Are you thinking of a centerfire?  This one clamps down into grooves on either side of the barrel.

I hope you have experience with this type, because no one else seems to have an answer.

Does your sight look more like Picture 1 or Picture 2 or Picture 3?

If it doesn't look like any of these, then try to google "rear sights" images and see if you can find a photo of what it looks like.

I would bet that your's is most like Pictures 1 and what you belive to be metal clamping onto the barrel is just the way the sight is made on to the dovetail that fits the slot in the barrel. The flat part of the sight is folded over and down around the dovetail piece. If so, then try my suggestion in the first post. Trust me. Trust me. It will move if you tap it hard enough. Tap may not be the best word. Whack is a better term. Bang would also work.

I have a 93GL and I removed the rear buckhorn when I mounted my scope. It took some real hard hits to get it to move at all.

If I am wrong, as I often am, then does the sight clamp to the receiver grooves above the bolt and you are mistakingly calling it the barrel?

We'll figure it out either way.

It looks like the one in picture #1. If I understand you correctly, I tap toward the muzzle or toward the receiver.  I'll look at it again. its my neighbor's gun and I'll have to stop over.

The other option I was thinking about was to carefully cut it in half, using a dremel. It is actually raised, so I think would avoid scracthing the barrel. My concern was that they soldered it in place. But it sounds like it is not.

I'll look at it tomorrow and get back with you.

Don't tap it toward the muzzel or the receiver! Tap perpendicular to the barrel. See there, you done went and made me use a word that I had to look up the spelling for.

The savage sight will look like this one on bottom once you get it out.

It surely didn't look like it would tap out. But I nudged it from the side and away it went!
