Question for the 500 S&W guys
« on: August 06, 2008, 04:35:19 PM »
I may be trading for a new Handi 500 S&W and was wondering what optics if any you were using on it?  Also I will be handloading and am interested in what you think is the best bullet and weight for whitetails?

Thanks

I've got a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 shotgun scope mounted in Leupold PRW rings on mine, works very well. Can't help ya with bullets for deer, but I can tell ya what works good on paper!! ;D

I use a Burris 2-7/35 on mine. As for bullets, I have shot several deer with my own 465gr hardcast bullet (I made out of wheelweights) in my 10.5" performance center 500. Just picked up the handi-rifle myself. My handloads picked up about 300 fps over the revolver. Let me tell you a 465gr slug @ about 1800fps out of a 6.25lb rifle will stomp you as much as whatever it hits. Thats why I put 4lbs of lead (11lbs total for the gun and scope) in my handi-rifle and it brought it down to 12 gauge slug recoil levels.

Mine has a Bushnell 1.5x - 4.5x 32mm... works good at the ranges I shoot.

I shoot 440WFN GC lead bullets. The WFN design really lays them lo. ::) ;D Stiff load of H110 sends them on there way.

Bullets available from ranger Rick in Alaska. Nice guy great bullet!!

My handi 500 wears a Leupold VXII 2X7 in matte with a custom reticule.

Here is my 500:

Good luck with yours!!

What about Red Dots, can they handle the recoil of the 500?

The better ones for sure... cheap ones, time will tell.
I have used them on a couple rifles and don't care for them.

I do like the one a turkey 870 the wife uses. But turkey season is warm and only 1/2 the day it doesn't offer the battery problems cold weather deer hunting dose.
