More questions about big bore rifles.
« on: August 24, 2008, 08:10:28 AM »
Hello friends:

I wonder who has the power to stop Rigby 416, compared with 458 Lott. In particular I want to ask whether the property with 416 Rigby kills an elephant, an African buffalo, a rhinoceros or a hippopotamus that burden against the hunter. I know that if Lott 458 overthrew these dangerous animals with solvency. On the other hand, I can tell you that I have a 375 H & H Magnum, what size you buy in my case? Thanks and forgive the inconvenience.

The best I can make out is he knows a 416 rigby & a 458 lott will kill these animals and that he has a 375H&H and wants to know what weight ammo to use to do the same.

I THINK !!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think we are talking apples to apples here among these three cartridges.

This had me so confused I had to spell check this post three times before I posted it!

Believe the man is asking which of the two rifles we would suggest as an addition to his 375 for hunting these animals.  Kind of hard to tell but his english is far superior to my spanish.  :)

Oscar1975, you have us a bit confused and a little more information may help.  Judging from what you wrote I would think the Lott would be the calibre of choice.  Depends a lot on the availability of ammunition or components where you live.  I know the 416 Rigby will do a fine job on the animals you mention but believe the 458 Lott will deliver more knockdown if it's needed to stop a charge.

Oscar 1975

Just went back and reread the thread about the 458 Lott you started on the 15th.  Pretty sure you are still looking at various calibers that may make a good addition to your collection.  If, and that's assuming Spanish wives are like American wives for the most part, you can get a kitchen pass on this go for broke and save up for both rifles.  On the other hand if you are going to get just one then save some cash for a reloading outfit (recharging?) so you can shoot more.

Too bad you can't get a Handi in 45-70, maybe a Buffalo Classic, as that old round will give you plenty of power for target shooting and, when loaded up, kick the heck out of you.

Good luck with your search and keep us posted on how things are going over there.

We ask forgiveness for the translation, because I enter the text in Spanish and the translator of google does the rest. Sorry. Exactly, I want to buy a rifle in caliber greater than 375 H & H Magnum that I have. I tell you that the rifle will be the same one CZ550, but the caliber is what I doubt it. I am almost convinced that the 458 thousand Lott, but I also adore the 416 Rigby, that's why I want to hear your views on this matter. I certainly do not ever go to Africa to hunt, but as we say in Spain: life is four days. That's why I want to give me a whim, the latest weapon to my dealer. Jejeej, as I said, my wife looks at me with murderous eyes every time I speak of arms. I hope that this time you have understood me and I again apologize. I say that the issue of buying the rifle is long term, because I have to save money little by little.

Thanks to all and greetings,

The 375 H&H Magnum, 416 Rigby and 458 Lott are all adequate to take dangerous game animals including elephant and buffalo.  For stopping power for a charging animal, I would say that the 458 Lott is the best.  Comparing the 375 H&H Magnum and the 416 Rigby is a bit more difficult; in my opinion they're about equal.

As for bullet size to use, you would go for the heaviest bullet available for the cartridge when hunting dangerous game.  In the 375 H&H Magnum, the most commonly available heaviest bullet weight would be 300 grains.  For the 458 Lott, the most common heavy bullet weight would be 500 grains though weights up to 600 grains are available; I think 500 grains is enough.  Since I don't load for a 416 Rigby, I don't remember bullet weights for it.

As far as bullet types to use, traditionally solids were used for dangerous game.  That has changed somewhat since the advent of certain tough premium bullets like Barnes.  Now, many professional hunters recommend a premium bullet for things like buffalo perhaps with solids for follow-up shots.  Solids are still recommended for elephant hunting.

At least in "los Estado Unidos" Hornady bullets are the most economical bullets to buy for shooting at targets.  The Hornady full metal jacket bullets are quite accurate in my 375 H&H Magnum and 458 Lott.

And there are several principles you have to learn in order to deal with women:

1.  Women can't count past 3.  This means you need at least 3 guns.  After you get 3 guns, you wife will refer to them as "estos rifles" and you can get as many as you like.  My wife recently opined that I probably had a least a dozen gun barrels (I have Thompson/Center products with interchangeable barrels)...if she only knew.

2.  Learn the dump truck principle.  Say you want a pickup truck.  Don't tell your wife you want a pickup truck; tell her you want a dump truck and then compromise and say you'll accept a pickup.  To make this work with your wife, tell her you want a 50 BMG and show her pictures of it; then compromise and tell her you'll get a 458 Lott instead.

I have many more recommendations on how to deal with wives too extensive to go into now since I have to take the garbage out and get dressed.

Thanks grumulkin (jejeje unusual nickname), thank you for councils with the sizes mentioned, and thank you for advice on the wife. My wife is not easily fooled, so I had thought to save money to tell her that I am going to put the gasoline car, I say to her that will put 20 euros in the deposit and I just put him 15 euros, well I am five to save jejeje. What do you think?, Is another idea.

My wife isn't easily fooled either.

Another thing to remember is that if a gun is going to cost $1,000 it will actually cost $2,000.  The extra is for gold, silver and precious stones for the wife.
