Gunbidder,
Nim's right. Every gun's freebore is different and you just have to measure it. The freebore will also be different with each manufacturer's bullet (Hornady, Nosler, Berger, ect).....and you will also want to check it if your shooting the same manufacturer's bullets in different grain weights. Nim's measurement method is fine. I usually do this three or four times for a bullet to make sure "I got it right". There are also freebore measuring tools that you can buy to do this work.
If you read the nosler reloading book, they will tell you to seat their bullets from 20 thousands to 50 thousands from the rifle lands for best accuracy. Hornady doesn't mention this....they just give SAMI OAL numbers. I don't know what Barnes or Sierria books tell you.
If your seating the bullet close to the lands (like in the 20 thousands range) lower the powder charge down from the maximum and check your brass for excessive pressure indications. (Split case at the neck, or the base, or a shiny ring at the base, or a loose primer pocket). If your showing signs of high pressure, then you may want to back off the powder charge, or seat the bullet a bit deeper, or both.
I hope this helps.
