Speaking of Federal Power Shoks
« on: September 10, 2008, 03:15:34 AM »
I took a 30-06 to the range for it's test firing with Federal 150 grain Blue Box ammo which has Power Shok emblazened on it. Well I normally use some factory ammo in a rifle before I load for it but in this case I wanted to get some brass for my 35 Whelen. The rifle sighted in perfectly in 13 rounds so I ended up pulling some bullets from some of this factory ammo to get the number of pieces I needed to get 20 to make Whelen brass.  The 150 grain bullets looked just like Remington corelokts that had been run thru a tumbler. I only had 165 grain corelokts to compare with but the similarity was as perfect as possible. I can't say this is a bad thing though. I edited the post, can't say why I put Hi Shok in the original post. Must be a thing in the past deal.

I've only tried the power shos in my 30-30s. These are less than $12 a box. They are very accurate in my Marlins as I have one that will group >in@100.  The only problem I've noticed is they almost always separate from the jackets once they hit the animal, even if only in soft tissue. I guess it's not that important as I've seen almost the exact same thing from the Remingtons.  They all seperate. The jackets are just not very strong. I've shot water jugs, phone books, and even an old swimming pool. They all performed the same.

The only make I've found that stayed together is the Federal fusions.  I haven't tried the Hornady wonder bullets yet.  I've been kind of turned off from them after buying several boxes of the regular stuff in other calibers  and getting duds.

30-30, thanks for that info! I have been thinking about trying some power shocks in my Marlin 336, now I will definitely give them a try!
