Other cannons
« on: August 01, 2008, 03:54:26 AM »
Several days back I posted a photo of three newly constructed pieces, a cannon and two mortors. I have build three other cannons in the past.  Attached is a photo of a deck gun that i build in the 70's, barrel 11" long 9/16 bore.   My first cannon was quite small, I made it in 1947 when I was 14.  The barrel was 3/8 dia 1/8" bore and was fitted to a HO gauge Railroad truck. It was fired electrically using a piece of filliment from a light bulb running from the touch hole  down to the rail road track. a lead ball and home made black powder. ( i'd been making black powder for a couple of years to fire rockets made from 50 cal machine gun cartridge cases.) My second cannon was a little larger and fired Gerber baby food cans full of plaster as projectiles  this was circa 1958.

Nope.  I'm NOT old!  Old is an ATTITUDE, AND I'm in DENIAL!

I'll only admit to being over 55 on Tuesdays, and that's at the grocery for the %5 discount.  0r was that on Wednesdays?

I feel it is my duty to make all of you guys feel better.  I was born  200 YEARS   after El Baiajeto, Cannonmn's latest charge, a big bronze 24 pdr., now residing at the U.S. Naval academy, was cast in Seville, Spain by Mathias Solano!  That's   200    years!!  And you guys thought you were old;  Phooey!  Now, doesn't that make you feel better?

You're welcome,

Tracy
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!
