Bear in Iowa
« on: May 30, 2008, 05:04:47 AM »
Seems some people near North Liberty have been seeing a bear.  No one has pictures and the only tracks found so far belong to dogs.  The DNR said it isn't outside the realm of possibility that a black bear wandered down from Wisconsin.

OK  there have been two bears killed in Iowa in the last couple weeks.  The first was near Sheffield in Cerro Gordo county.  They figgure it was a MN bear.  Theother was killed in SW IA in Fremont county about a mile from my cabin.  It was shot by a game warden when it came up to his house to raid the garbage.  I saw the hide, it measured 5 feet from nose to tail.  The examination showed full claws, perfect teeth, no holes in the ears,  swolen lymph nodes, in other words signs of a wild bear.  What's the deal, first mountain lions, then wild boars, now bears.

When I was growing up on our farm in Iowa, we had a black bear going down the North Skunk river that runs through the home farm.  Land is in Mahaska county, and that had to have been close to 50 years ago as I was just a young kid.  DP
