30-30 Handi - 1st 5 rounds
« on: August 11, 2008, 04:09:43 PM »
Took my new 30-30 barrel out today to get the new scope sighted in. Bore sighted it @ 25 yds and wanted to see how well it would do with live rounds @ 50 yds., so I took a large pizza box with a 2" black mark in the center and set out with 5 new 30-30 handloads.
First shot, couldn't see any impact on the white box anywhere. Second shot, left of the mark. So where did the first one go? I walked down to the target and then I saw that the first shot had hit in the black! Back to my makeshift shooting bench ( plastic milk case seat and two 1" dowels shooting sticks) and shot the final 3 rounds. I probably could have done better but I was still excited from the first two, plus 50 yds. uphill gets a bit-o-blood pumping in this old guy (living on a ridge all the shots are either uphill or downhill, the only flat spot of land is where the house is sitting).
Looks like this will be a fun barrel to work up some loads with!

BTW the scope is a 4x32 Simmons Blazer. I had my eye on a Leupold FX but momma had other ideas of where to spend the stimulus money...

Looks good!  Just for "kicks and grins", pick up a box of Remington 150 gr . Corelokts and see what happens.  I haven't yet been been able to cook up a handload that competes with it. ;)  Love those .30-30 Handi's!

Love your handle, "OR-E-GONE" ;D.  (I graduated from High School in St. John's, on the North side of Portland.  I haven't yet been able to educate people here in the Midwest how to say your state name.)

Yep, I was once one of those Midwesterners that couldn't pronounce Oregon properly. Ar-a-gone and Will-a-mette were the first two names I had to correct after moving out here.  :D

Something only someone from Warshington would say!!! ::)

Yesterday after reloading the original 5 rounds and changing only the powder charge by 1/2 gr., I got this group, the last three of the five shots in the tightest group. Time to take it out to 100 yards and start getting serious.

Those last three are a fantastic group for anything but a dedicated BR rig.
Keep doing whatever you did on those shots!
