SKS cycling problem

I bought a Yugo SKS and took it out to fire.  I got 1 or 2 shots that cycled fine.  The next 10 had to be manually cycled to eject them.   I took it home and cleaned it thoroughly, including the piston and gas tube with crocus cloth.  Took it to the range again and not a single time out of 50 shots did it eject the case!!  What gives??  My gas port in the barrel is not blocked off and the piston rides nicely in the tube.   Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It sounds like the gas cutoff for the grenade launcher is engaged.

If the gas valve is indeed in the proper position a reliable quick fix can be found here that makes use of a common paper clip.

The paper clip has worked for me for many many rounds and costs nothing.

You're not the only one by a long shot.  Try the paper clip.  The key is to not leave any noticeable end gap as in the first picture.  My son-in-law ran over 1100 rounds through one of my Yugos in an afternoon without so-much as a hiccup and no cleaning.  When I took it down to clean it I replaced the clip with a fresh one.  I turned down a new valve that that should be a perfect fit I'll install at the next cleaning, but not until then.  Good luck!

Hows your gas port?  Is it wide open?  One of my yugo 59's was plugged so solid i had to put the gas port cleaning tool on a pair of vise grips to crank it thru the crud in the port.  They were shooting rubber or plastic bullets and it plugged the port.

On the sks we have to becareful how high we lift the gas tube when removing it.  I lift them just enough to clear the rear site housing so it can be removed.  If we lift it too high we elongate the tube thus causing a gas leak when it cycles.
