Hawkeye 300WM accuracy
« on: July 09, 2008, 05:00:38 PM »
I bought a new Ruger Hawkeye 300WM. The first box of ammo I fired was the cheapest ammo I could find, that Federal Hot-Core in the blue box. Accuarcy was excellent, barely over 1 inch at 100yds. I live in Alaska, so I wanted to use a bonded bullet. I bought a box of Remington Siroccos, but the groups opened up to over 3 inches at 100 yds. I guess it just doesn't like Remington ammo. Anyway, does anyone here shoot a Hawkeye in 300WM and what factory ammo does the best in your gun? Thanks.

I shoot a .300WSM of a different make, but my suggestion is to try some Accu-bonds, they shoot great in my rifle, but I handload for mine. Actually, try any good premium bullet until you get the accuracy that you are looking for, and please let us know what you find out!  Good luck

K.K.

That's exactly what I bought, Winchester Factory Ammo with Accu-bonds in 180 grain. I shot today at the range and the groups were amazing. I guess the groups were 1 inch or less at 100yds with a led sled. I didn't get down and measure, but I was impressed. I couldn't do better than 5 inch groups at 300 yds, but that's probably me, I'm a bow hunter. I'm just gonna keep shooting these Accu-bonds and work on my skills. Thanks for the reply.

BTW, the plan is to moose hunt, but my real passion is to get a grizz before I leave Alaska.

KP-

I'm glad that you found a good load. Mine likes the 180 Accu-Bonds as well, but it was too much for whitetails here in NY. I went to the 165gr and accruacy has been superb. all in one hole at 100 yards.  If I lived in Alaska, I'd load up with the 180s and feel very well-armed. By the way, I also own a Lead Sled, the only way I could test 50-100 rounds of WSM at one sitting!  Send us some pics of your trophies this year.

You said post a picture, so here you go...

My rifle hunting plans fell apart, but I got lucky and drew a North Slope bull moose tag. Like I said I'm a bow hunter, so I took my bow. I know it's not a real "trophy", but I don't care. It was a great hunt, just me and my wife. Second day of the hunt, September 4th, 37 inches wide, 61 yard shot, double lunged, appx 1500 lbs of dead moose... Great hunt and my wife really had fun. She didn't even mind the 6 hours it took to field dress, skin and quarter the moose.

Back to the 300 WM. I tried some 180 grain NP factory loads by Federal today. That gave me the best grouping so far. I've found my rifles pet loads.
