.270 ported barrel problems
« on: August 15, 2008, 06:19:00 PM »
I have a buddy that has a .270 that has been ported. and it will not shoot worth a durn. it is over bored to .342 and is 2.028 deep. It has 35 .181 holes all the way around or 360 deg. the barrel is a bull or heavy barrel ,24" long . He got a good deal on it but if it don't shoot well no deal is a good deal. we were wondering if by porting it , the barrel is ruined .

from your description it sounds like a 270 Ultra Comp.
That would be a factory installed muzzle compensator on the rifle.
Generally, the .270 Handi rifles are excellant shooters.
Here's what it looks like removed from the barrel:

I've got a couple Ultra Comps, a 30-06 and a 270, had another 270 but sold it to a fellow member here, they all shoot very well.  Have him read the Handi Basics 101 and spend some time in the FAQs and Help sticky.  ;)

Could use a little more info as to what its doing .

Large groups , flyers , vert stringing , ect ?

What ammo is he using , factory or handloads ?

Bullet weight ?

Optics ?

Factory rifle or extra barrel ?

thanks again for the info.
I did show him the FAQ and handis basics and told him that just about you wanted to know about handies could be found on this site. you may have a new guy checking you out.
I think that he may be using too heavy bullet . He has shot 150 gn and i think that the ultimate weight for .270 is 130 . My .280 loves 140s but spread considerable with 150s .Noticed that my .243 likes 65s instead of 100s. Hes going to try 130s. He also has a new Nikon scope with some type of new fangled range select knob on the side other than windage or elevation knobs. I'm not familiar with the scope, and I'm going to check out the mounting this weekend, at the range. I think or hope it is some thing simple.

  there again, thanks  again

Jim

I have 2 of the 270 Handi's , neither one cares for the 150g bullets , one does great with 130g and the other likes 90g so the bullet weight may be a big part of the problem , as for the scope he may have one with the wheel Paralax ajustment , never used one but hear that most like them .

By all means have him try different loads, but both of my 270 Ultra Comps shoot 150gr just fine, you just need the right load. ;) The target below was shot with handloaded 150gr Nosler Partitions at 100yds, no forend work was done, that loose one is the usual third shot flyer. ::)
