« on: August 19, 2008, 11:06:53 AM »
i just looked over a rifle that H&R model 980 on it. it was a 12 gauge slug gun. it had the "ultra" stock on it. is this gun worth $200? it had a tasco bantam scope on it.

980 is astandard ultra slug gun. If it is in good condition that's a real good price. Take a look at gunbroker to see what used ones are going for. If I was in the market I'd buy it.

this is by far the heaviest gun that i have ever held. what is the recoil going to be like? better or worse than a 300 win mag?

Ahhh...A heavy gun it is, especially when you add a scope.  But, a more stable shooting platform for slugs you will not find.

I have never shot a 300 Win Mag so I cannot comment there...I can tell you that the recoil is worse than a 30-06 because I have fired one of them.

FWIW, the recoil of my Ultra Slugger with 2 3/4" Lightfield Hybred Sabots is less than what I was enduring when shooting my Rem 870 with 3" Rem Sluggers...All were manageable when hunting though...Who feels the recoil when shooting at a deer? Not me...

;D just shoot a couple 3 1/2's in one of the 5 1/2 poud H&R turkey guns   :o after that the heavy slug gun will be mild ;D
I all ways though the gun weigh enough that is more of a heavy shove  where the lighter singles recoil like someone punching you
