Encore Rifle Owners - Accuracy?
« on: August 12, 2008, 06:07:42 PM »
I have a few rifles(7). It may be that I am not the best rifle shot, but my Contender pistols outshoot my rifles consistently.

Could I expect an improvement if I bought an Encore rifle?

My theory is, that the short barrel in the pistols has less flex and is therefore more accurate.

You only need an encore if you are going to the magnum rounds. It is much heavier than the contender or contender 2.

No guarantees on accuracy improvements, but you can select higher pressure cartridges not just specifically magnums that the contender cannot handle.

Unless you need or want to go to the higher pressure catridges, as suggested, why fix what ain't broke?   The Contender frame with carbine or rifles barrels on it can be very precision shooters, so much so that many of them easily outshoot most production rifles.

Nothing wrong with the Encore either, either in pistol or rifle configuration.   I found I could do anything I wanted to do with the Contender wildcats though (pistol or carbine), so sold off all my Encores years ago.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Mike,

I'm not real sure I agree with your theory on the Contender that shorter is better. When I first bought my Contender I had a .223 14" barrel on it which shot OK. When I sold that barrel and put a 23" rifle barrel .223 on it, the accuracy was night and day. Left that frame for rifle only and bought another frame for Contender pistol barrels.

Have you used any type of hang bar system on your Contender rifle barrels? Maybe I'm asking you questions you have already resolved and if so I don't mean to re-hash old stuff.

Just trying to help if possible.

Sorry, I guess I was not clear. The rifles that I own are not Contenders.

I was asking if an Encore rifle would be an improvement over my Brownings, Remingtons, etc. I was looking for the kind of groups you are getting.

My testing is off a bench. My rifles shoot 1 MOA or worse, while my Contender pistols range from 1/3 MOA to .75 MOA.

again sorry for the confusion,

Mike,

I wouldn't be weeping over that kind of MOA with your pistols. That's good stuff. Could you do better with rifle barrels? Maybe....but then....how much better and what are you trying to do??....shoot the wings off of flys?

I'd say sell the Brownings and Rem's and buy Encore's. With some forearm float and handload work, you can get those sub-MOA! If you really want some "guarantees" then just pick up an Encore frame and stock, and buy custom barrels.
