Shikari .44Mag accuracy
« on: December 18, 2007, 02:57:38 AM »
I am looking at an older .44M Shikari. I have read a few negative comments regarding older .44s accuracy, and would like to know if it applies to older Shikaris. - Pete

The older .44 Mag Handi's suffered from a .432 overbore.  The newer ones are supposed to be closer to the normal .429 bore.  I would guess the same machine did both the Shikari and the Handi but do not know for sure.

I can't comment directly on the .44 mag, but my Shakari 45/70 has much deeper grooves than current production 45/70s. It is easy enough to slug the bore and that is the only way to really know what you have.

Welcome Slim!! The Shikaris had good bores, I wouldn't hesitate on them, they were made by the original H&R, it's the NEF barrels that are the problem, until this year's production. But be aware there's no service available for them at H&R and they won't fit barrels to them. :(

Buy it Slim, you won't be disappointed. ;)

Best I've done so far with mine is about 1.5" @ 50m. This is with a peep site off a rest.

Is it at Cleavers?

No, its at the Open Range, Toowoomba. Its tempting, I like the straight grip stock, but I'm not keen on the foreend with ram rod . I'll wait for a 45/70. Web site is www.theopenrange.com.au. - Pete
