Tony: For heaven's sake, you can load a .45-70 to be a gentle caress to as stout as you can stand. One of my favorite "plinker" loads was a modest charge of Unique under the Lee 340-grain cast bullet. Very mild, nicely accurate, and a load that a 12-year-old could shoot all day. Don't let recoil issues keep you from enjoying a .45-70. It is a wonderfully versatile round, and could scarcely be more historic.
