boredom cost me 8"
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:32:28 AM »
I honestly did not think it would work but a pipe cutter can actually cut through a shotgun barrel.  I sanded the sharp edge off the inside edge of the barrel,  should that be enough or do I need to re crown it some how?  I'm also JB welding a scope rail on, not sure how that's going to work out.

A nice crown is always good for accuracy, it doesn't take much of an imperfection  to destroy accuracy, there are several methods that can be done at home with simple tools, see the FAQs.  ;)

Busta, that's what came to my poor demented mind.   I would expect that none of us can afford to loose 8".   I could be wrong.

Here is the finished project.  The only thing left to do besides shoot it is pick a scope.  I was thinking of a fixed power in the 2 to 4 power range.

Looks good. Is that a bed-liner stock and forend? Let us know how it shoots and if the J-B Weld holds up.

A "gunsmith" "welded" a sight blade on a shotgun for me.  He actually glued it on with JB weld.  I think it lasted 2 shots before it blew off.  I found it after some serious looking and took it to a real gunsmith to have it soldered on with silver bearing solder.  I hope your JB weld project goes better than mine did.

The loctite blackmax works well on rifle sights i know....I can't vouch for scope bases with that kind of recoil...Since the scope/base weigh more it seems like it would take more to hold it in place....

I finally got to the range to try it out and was pleasantly surprised.  I shot some federal tactical slugs that grouped about 6" at 60 yds which was not impressive.  I then shot some brenneke magnum classics 2 3/4" . I shot four three round groups that averaged about 2", not bad for an amateur job.  The scope mount that I JB welded is still holding strong after all 20 rds. I fired which was another nice surprise.  The biggest downfall is that it kicks like a mule, I don't think it even weighs 5 lbs and with that short barrel it's brutal.

NICE gun!!!

 I LOVE short shotguns!!!

Hope it holds for you, But I don't put much faith in glued on bases... and scope's on such a short handgun seem defeating of the purpose. I like peeps!! Mine are drilled and tapped.

Recoil is a function of your brain. You feel it now because that's all you are thinking about. When you have antlers in your sights you won't feel a thing.

I'm not so good w/ iron sights so I use a low power scope w/ long eye relief that allows me to keep both eyes open and pick up the target fast.

Looking at the photo, it doesn't appear that you have a recoil pad on the stock.  Yup, I can understand brutal.  Although with that gun a recoil pad is only going to help so much.

How did you prep the barrel before using the JB Weld?  Did you "scuff" it up?

You are correct no recoil pad. I took both the scope rail and the barrel down to bare metal with my dremel and a grinder stone.  I left it rough hoping the JB Weld would hold better and so far so good
