BARREL LENGTH,,,,preference?
« on: July 28, 2003, 04:51:59 PM »
10",,12",,14",,16",,or carbine 21-24"?????
The pistol barrel lengths are what I'm curious as to why you guys have desired the lengths you have. When I had a 35 Remington,,I was glad to have 14" of barrel to get the muzzle blast away from my unprotected [while hunting deer]ears. Even the 10"ers are better than haveing a cylinder gap to blast flame, crack and bark off a tree you have next to you in a stand.
What's your reasoning behind your barrel length of choice?

PS-I have NO desire for muzzle brakes on pistols OR rifles! TOO loud.

I prefer 14-15" barrels for handguns.  I don't like anything longer for handguns but like 22-24" in the carbine.  The 10" barrels handle nice but I prefer the extra length.

Another thing, one reason I prefer the 14" length is the recoil.  The 14" barrels seem to push straight back while the 10" have a lot of muzzle flip.  I also dislike muzzle brakes.  I want to try one of the new 12" 357 barrels rechambered to the Max.  My 14" 45-70 is unbraked and is a hammer on whitetail out to 150yds.

I prefer the 10"ers unless the cartridge warrants a 14  (such as 375 Win, 30-30).  I have gotten to where I can shoot the 14"ers off hand better than I ever could before so I am liking them more and more.  Getting ready to build my first carbine.  Am going with the 24" barrel.  The overall length with the 21" is the same as my Win Trapper, and that is a little short in my opinion even though that gun serves its purpose.

Bullseye,

The shortness of the carbine is what I like.  I don't shoot the carbine very much but it packs much easier than a full size rifle.  I find that a full bull 17 or 22 is a little muzzle heavy for the 22-24".  The 17's are also too muzzle heavy longer than 14" in the handgun to me.

I would have to say my preference is for any barrel that is chambered for a rifle type cartridge be a 14" or 15" in Handguns. The reason if quite simple, most all of the rifle type cartridges need that much barrel length to be efficient. Granted there are exceptions to this, as there are generally exceptions to everything. The muzzle blast and recoil is also a consideration.

If to be chambered in typical Handgun Type Cartridges I have always prefered the 10" Bull Barrels. Yes they are a lot handier to carry, and easier to shoot from less than ideal shooting postions. The Handgunner with a little inginuety can offset this a little with the aid of either a walking staff or shooting sticks with the longer barrels.

With the aid of one of these types of rests I find that I can actually shoot the 14" & 15" Barrels a little better than the 10" versions. I think it is due to the way their added weight helps them be more steady with the support from the field rests I use.

Currently my Contender barrels are either 14" or 15" if that means anything.

ditto to what sd handgunner said.  14"-15" for rifle calibers, and i may even choose one in the straight wall calibers.
my reasoning is mostly performance oriented. i can use some sort of rest in the field to make the shot. homemade crossed stix from fiberglass tent poles work pretty good.  :blaster:

I take a little different approach to this.  I first pick the caliber I want to shoot and then base my barrel length off of that.  I like to make sure that I am burning every bit of powder inside the barrel.  I currently use a 10” barrel chambered in 6.5mm TCU for close in work and a 7-30Waters for distances past 100yds.

24" carbine and 10 or 14

I have a 24" bull barrel 30-30AI and it balances well.  I like the 10 for shooting offhand and the 14 for off of my leg or with a rest.  I shoot silhouettes in case you are wondering why I shoot off of my leg.  It is not as dangerous as it sounds.  Dan

PJ 16.5" might be sweet but is it legal

As far as barrel length for me it dosent matter ,,its how far you will be shooting 50 yards i dont think it matters what cal. But a 10" will hit .. 75-150yards a 15" barrel should reach it and 200+yards unless you know what "you can do with a pistol " 20"+ is good barrel length.
Also depends if you are shooting papper or pray

I have only one barrel and that's a 10in. 7mm-08. It seems to be very handy and works well with my revolver holsters too.
I have shot the longer barreled encores and I too notice some less barrel "flip".I plan to get a 6mm or 243 next, will probably be in 14".

There is nothing illegal about a 16.5" pistol. Pitol barrels can be as long as you want.

16.5", I believe is the minimum for a rifle barrel. Smart choice of length if a person wants to go both pistol and rifle with the same barrel.

The 6mm-223 is excellent in a 14-15" bull barrel.
