Min barrel length....
« on: August 26, 2008, 08:21:02 AM »
Hey all,

I just had a muzzlebrake put on a 15 inch barrel, and its length is now over 16 inches.  Does this put it into a rifle length?  The orig barrel is still 15", and the brake puts it over.  I know that the feds require 16 inches, but is that a rifled length???

Just curious...

Total length, but the muzzlebreak must be permanently attached.  That means brazed or welding as I understand.

it has to be a permanant muzzle brake for it to count.  permanant may be defined as a certain amount of spot welding, pinning, etc.  i'm not sure the actual requirements.  but just screwing it on is defnintely no good.

My buddy the retired gunsmith told me that silver solder is permanent enough for the Feds. Lead solder is not. Not sure about braze. I suppose spot welds, but would not really like to do that much heat to a barrel. And yes, the 16 inches over all (breech to bolt face, agents drop a rod down the muzzle and measure to the part that sticks out)... is all it takes as long as there is some rifling. Smoothbore/shotgun must be 18 inches. luck.
