range report BC&30-30
« on: August 27, 2008, 08:12:36 AM »
Took my daughter to the range today. I was shooting my BC and she was shooting her 30-30. I had almost a pound of H4895 laying around and thought it would give it a try in both guns. In the BC i started with 56gr under cheap Remington 300gr JHP. First 3 shot group was about 31/2" at 100yds shooting a  3 shot group. then moved up to 57grs. 3 shot group was 1". recoil was moderate as i was only wearing a t-shirt, so three shots was enough. had 2 loads of each left and fired all 4 as fast as i could load and sight. the group was 1 1/4" with 3 shots touching. my daughter had a bit more trouble. she never did get anything like a group.started with 31.5gr under 125gr JHP's. she said recoil was OK but nothing better than 3" group for her. I do have a better load for the 30-30 or it could have just been her.

You should just stick to factory 150 gr. Core Lokt's in the 30-30.
More accurate than most handloads right out of the box.

As they say, "YMMV", but my experience with the .30-30 Handi mirrors Spanky's.

Nice report, thanks for sharing! ;)

They're right, this 100yd target says it all, and at $9-$12 a box, kind a hard to beat!  ;D

Thank You for sharing. Try a box of the Remington Corelokt. The 30-30 is one of the better shooting Handi's

I bought a really nice Remington M14R some years back. Its chambered in 35REM with a factory peep. Well long story short, NOTHING I could load seemed to shoot that well in it. A good friend of mine had been pestering me since he found out I owned it to buy it.  I also have a fondness for Rem Pumps and this was my nicest piece and said no.

Well I tell you, I was pretty frustrated one day and was on the brink of taking him up on his offer. When  a buddie and I decided to shoot up all remaining ammo from a standing, offhand position at 50 yards, fast shooting. We put up a running deer target and both began shooting. The target was riddled when we where done, looked like Swiss cheese!!  He asked if I was done and I said I was out of ammo. He still had a half box of Rem 200RN factory ammo. He asked if he could shoot my rifle, I said sure and handed it over. He proceeded to dump 4 rounds almost touching into the head of the deer target!! We walked up to confirm. I was dumb founded... We stepped back and I was also able to do the same thing. This was reg yell/green box Cor-lokts. I was always under the assumption that no matter what gun, I could increase its accuracy with my hand-loads. NOT with this rifle, at least I am not able to find the load that will do it!!

No matter, I don't use it much, its more of a bragging gun, something to take out when friends come over to fondle and admire. but if I ever need it to perform... I'll have some 200 Rem RNSP readily available!!

I use remmy core-lokts in my old model marlin 30-30 and the groups will danged near clover leaf.  Its hard to argue with that kind of accuracy.  Its one of the few calibers I own that I don't already own reloading dies for, and probably won't anytime soon.

I loaded up some youth loads using 27.2 - 28.5 gr H4895 with a 125 gr Sierra HP/FN.  Light recoil and get 1" or under at 100 yards.  Also get 1" or under at 100 yards with Remington Core Lokts and Winchester Power Points.  Seems to shoot everything pretty good.
