Handi 7mm-08 opinions
« on: September 04, 2008, 01:52:47 PM »
I have a friend that has a virtually new 7mm-08 tapered barrel with laminated stocks that wants 225.00 for the package. First,is the price about right? Second, what about the accuracy of the 7mm-08 out of a tapered barrel?

Others will have to comment on the price but a 7mm-08 in that barrel should give you great hunting accuracy. I have been wanting a 7mm-08 Handi barrel for a while now but not many come for sale, that has to tell you something about thier accuracy and desireability....<><...:)

I have two 7-08 Handi's and both shoot great.  I have a Remington Model 7 in the same caliber and the low cost Handi will shoot with the Remington all day.  With factory ammo both barrel's will shoot just under 1" groups.  My Remington will shoot just a hair smaller groups.  Both the Remington and the Handi's have inexpensive Barska scopes on them.

That's good to here about the 7-08.
I have one but haven't had time to shoot it yet.

I pieced together my Handi 7mm-08 last year (barrel, receiver with a nice trigger, from the classifieds) before the deer hunting season, and it shoots about 1" at 100 yards all day long, with any factory ammo I feed it.

It's my "go to" deer rifle, and I've harvested several feral hogs, and a big bodied 10 point last season at 150 yards, and he went straight down, and never moved a muscle, dropping on the spot, after taking the bullet just behind the front shoulder.

Just got back from the range the other day since I put a new scope on the rifle and she shot back in with just three rounds.

You cannot go wrong with the 7-08!   It packs a heck of a punch from that size cartridge.

Nothing wrong with the price, either!

I've got other non-Handi bolt guns, in 7 Mag. couple of 30-30's, a 303 British, and the 7-08 is my favorite go to deer rifle!     You won't be disappointed!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

That's a fair price.

My 7mm-08 Handi was new last winter.  I've shot perhaps a hundred rounds of Rem 140 gr. through it with excellent accuracy.  My 13 year old grandson and I will be out with it today to make sure it is dialed in for him since I have vision problems.  He'll be hunting Michigans Youth Deer Hunt the 27th and 28th of this month.  He doesn't know it yet, but it is his Christmas present for this year.

The price seems good to me.

You won't regret it. 7mm-08 is a great round (even if it is a pointy bullet  :P ) and you shouldn't see any accuracy problems from that barrel.

I hope to range test this weekend the new 7MM-08 barrel that came from Remington the other day.
I did use some J@B bore paste and Kroll mix on a drill and it did take care of the cambering problem with the brass
I will be handloading some IMR 3031 and 4350 on the low end and see how it shoots will keep you posted on my finding

I think you got an excellent rifle for a more than fair price.  I don't think you'll have any regrets.  Good luck, good shooting and have fun.  Pete

I did test the new 7MM-08 to day 60 yards from the bench 2 different powder loads
The slower IMR 4831 printed a nice group but the faster IMR 3031 shot excellent, but like all handi first 3 shot group all in 1 hole then it started to climb on the 4 and 5 shot.
I had some trouble with fired brass seem to stick in the chamber and had the action pop open on 1 shot out of 20 rounds
The action seem tight on lock up but when open a tad to smooth compared to the original barrel my 30-06

You know, I was shooting my 7mm-08 today, and I punched a button on the recoil pad and it slid over.  Holy smokes, right under there was a switch that was inscribed "Auto Pilot"  I snapped it on and put the rifle in a gun cabinet.  I came home 3 hours later and had 4 bucks and two does stacked up on the back porch.  I picked up the 7mm and the barrel was warm!  Can you imagine that???

Seriously, it is one very special Handi rifle.  I love mine.
