Org. finnish on 1917?

I've got a 1917 enfield that has been refinished with a high gloss finish.
I stripped it down to bare wood, and it isn't walnut???
What woods other than walnut was used on these , and what type finish was used?

 IIRC, as they were reconditioned after WWI, they made some birch stocks for them after running out of the original walnut ones.

The last one I owned came right out of a box, with all attachments. The finish was parkerized and the stock was Walnut.  Other stock woods might possibly include Maple or Birch, maybe not.  HTH.  Mikey.

So if the stock isn't walnut then it was reconditioned after WWI?
What kind of finish was used on them ?(oil or a varnish)

Boiled linseed oil or Tung oil.   NOT Tung oil finish like you'd find at Lowes's.
