Colt King Cobra price???
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:55:06 AM »
Took my daughter to look at some revolvers to get an idea of how her hand will fit them and lo and behold there was a really nice Colt King Cobra for sale.  Blue, no appreciable wear or marks, no known round count, no fingerprints etc, rubber grips.  I'd say based on my cursory exam (didn't want to appear too interested...) it is in the 90% range.  So now I'm thinking that I just have to have it... for me... not for her.  The thing is there is NO price on it.  There is no record in the book for what they paid for it.  I'm going to offer $350 for it which I know is a really GOOD price but what about $500 or $600?  I see prices online from $595 to $1200.  I'm not sure what length barrels were offered but I would say this is a 6" or so.  I'll go back tomorrow to look again (with money in hand)...  Let me know what ya'll think.

ngh:  Ok, if ya gotta have it, then ya gotta have it.  The Colbra - same lockwork as the Pythons, I believe but different externals - finish, grips, barrel (I believe).  I believe the Colbra line parallels the S&Ws M27/28 line somewhat but could be off on that assumption.

Colt revolvers - do they still make parts for the Colbra?  Do they still make and sell them?  Any gunsmiths in your area (now or in the future) who work on Colts????  This isn't an 1873 or clone for CASS where they may be a slew of folks who can help with any problems.

If it works and locks up tight; if the cylinder locks up when the hammer is drawn back slowly and cocked, then I'd give ya $250 for it, just to be nice.  I suppose it may be worth $350 but not out of my pocket.  JMTCW.  Mikey.

If it locks up and is in reasonable shape $350 is a fair price.  The name Colt adds $100 to most any style of gun.  There's apparently a large Colt fan club and even though fair market price may be $200 or so; few dealers will bargain much for a Colt.  I've tried, even at pawn shops with dusty models.  Start at the $250 and don't go much over $350 unless it's in mint shape.

They're not cheap, and they're hard to find, at least in this area....

I was toying with the idea of getting a used Colt revolver, something like a Trooper or Lawman Mk. 3 last winter.  Here in the Minneapolis area they were wanting $800.00 plus for a 1970's vintage, used Colt, plain jane gun with finish wear.  I had to give up that idea.  I did not even try to shop for a Python, Diamondback, or Anaconda.

What is scary is those guns are only going to go up and up, unless Colt wakes up and starts making a nice selection of handguns again.

if, that is a big if, you can get it for 350.00 ,and it is a gun you really want go for it. one thing for sure is you'll probably recoup what you got invested in it plus some additional funds.
enjoy, dan

I think a $500 offer will not be taken as a serious intent too buy.

I think $350 will buy the gun. I have a Trooper 4" nickle that I would put on the auction for $550 with dies and cases, add $60 for Bianchi holster.

Well now... I've certainly got a range of ideas on the price...  Wow, you guys keep a guy wondering!  Still not sure but I KNOW he won't laugh at me.  It's in a military Rod and Gun club.  It has been sitting in the vault for AT LEAST three years at this point.  There are NO records of the purchase price.  MWR is pushing the R&G clubs to eliiminate there standing inventory and the new manager isn't a gun guy.  He may not take my offer BUT he won't go any higher than the $450 compensated 686 right next to it.  We just found out we are going to get access to our indoor range for rec fire and I "need" a handgun or two...  I'm only allowed to own two handguns here so I have to buy wisely...

Okay so now it's tomorrow and I'm still in shock and giggling like a little kid...

I finally, after four days of trying, made it to our Rod and Gun Club when it was open AND when the one guy who could open the vault was there AND available.  I had to sit around for an hour and a half to wait on him though... but I wasn't leaving until I got to look...  So we looked at the Colt King Cobra.  I was pretty sure I wanted to buy it but I wasn't going to go above about $400.  Then I looked at the S&W next to it just to see if it was what I thought it was.  Yep, it had that Performance Center logo on the side.  So I was sort of interested in it too.  Then, since there was no tag on either of them (or the other compensated S&W next to them) we went to look them up in the computer.  Being the nosy kind of guy that I am I looked over his shoulder as he scrolled through the list.  First the Colt came up... their computer had it at $150 so I said "well I guess I'll take the Colt" with a sort of fatalistic tone since I didn't want him to know that I had seen the entry for the S&W PC as well.  It was marked at $150 too!  So to wrap it all up I bought both for the grand whopping total of $300!!!

I'm still shocked...  OH, and the family accountant was sitting there too.  She asked if I was sure about the value of the guns.  She can't pass up great deals anymore than I can (or probably any of you for that matter).  I told her that I had searched online and the Colt was going for over $500 on gunbroker.com and new PC revolvers are all over $1000 and most are in the $1500 range.  Once I told her that, she knew I was on a buying spree and there wasn't much to stop me, so instead of just putting money down and paying the rest today, she dug in her pocket and brought out $200 more dollars to pay them off in full.  She said she didn't want the shop to figure out how much money they were losing overnight and try to change the price.  She knew that once we had the "PAID IN FULL" stamp it was a done deal so she gave me the money.  Of course I have to pay her back out of my "gun money" that I scrimp and save for all year.  She's not that nice about it!!!
Since I can only own two handguns as a hunter in Germany, I have to find another hunter to buy the third .357 (the other standard compensated .357 S&W) for $150 and to hold it for me until I can take at least one of mine back to the US this fall on leave.  Then I would be able to "buy" it back from the other guy.  Nothing like getting some "trade goods" for the future huh?
Actually the Colt may go to my daughter for her 16th birthday if she wants it instead of a SA .45 (see post below).  I have to wait until she comes back from her summer job at camp to decide...

Y'all have a  great day!  I'm riding a gun buyin' high right now... the addiction has been well fed!!!

This is mind boggling. Both for $300! Wow, I wonder if the guy will ever know how badly he screwed up?!? Man, I'm glad you got 'em. Those are two fine guns.

I didn't know they made the King Cobra with a blued finish. I thought they were all stainless steel.

Thanks for the info Savage -- I didn't know my Grizzly was worth so much. Now I'll be afraid to shoot it! How much are 4" Anacondas these days?

If I can figure out a legal way around the legalities, I'll go back and get another regular Smith for $150 too.  They have some Sig 232's in .380 for about $300 too.  No, they won't ever figure it out.  At least not until I outprocesss to go home...  The really weird part is they have some other privately owned firearms there that are just sitting in the vault and have been for something like five years.  When the German law changed a few years ago, a lot of people never picked their guns up because they didn't want to have to buy a safe and get a license.  Then they retired or PCS'd and now the Rod and Gun Club is stuck with them for who knows how long until they meet the requirements as abandoned property and can be sold.  There are probably 25 handguns and 10-15 longguns in the vault that "belong" to someone somewhere but who will never come back to get them.  Some are junk, some are really nice pieces.  I just hope to be around when two or three of them come up for sale.  Lot's of guns like that around Germany that are sort of in "limbo".  Yep, the Colt is blued.  Online I can only find stainless for sale though.  When I get the registration done and can bring them home I'll have to post a picture of my $300 purchases...

update on the two pistols... it is NOW the 23rd of October.  I FINALLY got to go pick up MY revolvers on the 20th.  That's THREE months since I paid in full for them.  Granted, about a month of that could have been cut off if I had been better about getting my butt downtown to pay my fees and such.

Colt King Cobra - $150
S&W PC .357    - $150
Registration      - $180

Total               - $480

Any way I look at it... I got a good deal.  Can't wait to get them to the range... Now I need a scope for the Smith, a holster for the Colt, a holster or harness for the Smith, a hard case to carry them in...
