I just bought a .408" LFN mould for a 40 caliber Sharps, and the instructions say that either Hornady or Gator gas checks will work.

Hornday only offers checks for the .416.  Will these work for my .408 mould?

Gator offers both .416 checks, and .41 caliber pistol gas checks in 2 different sizes.

Which of these 4 choices is best?

if veral doesnt mind me fielding this. The 41s are a pain when it comes to gas checks. There are molds cut for the lyman check thats discontinued and molds cut for the hornady check and theres molds cut that neither work well on. Best bet with 41s is to mic your shank and get ahold of gator checks and he will sell you ones that actually fit properly. Ive had two lbt molds that were the same bullet that used differnt checks. Im sure the reason was that whoever ordered specd it out with the check he wanted.

Gators smaller checks may have an advantage, but I doubt if it would show in performance.  Sizing will be slightly easier with the smaller ones.  The 416 size will work great on bullet diameters down to .400, if I cut the 10MM mold (LBT).

While we are on the subject of 41 cal gas checks. -- OLD STYLE Lyman checks, which are much thinner stock than Hornady or Gator uses, were the only thing available until recently.  So there are many thousands of 41 and 416 molds out there which have check shanks that are too large for the new thicker checks.  They will work fine with 44 caliber checks, my friends!  Take them back out of mothballs and use them.  Current Lyman and RCBS checks are all manufactured by Hornady, to Hornady specks.  It is possible to find the old Lyman checks on dealer shelves though.  If there is any question when you purchase checks open the box and if they are yellow they are the old Lyman, which won't fit modern molds. (I cut molds for the old Lyman checks for about 20 years, but switched to a smaller check shank when Hornady started makeing thicker checks.)
