SB 1 Frame, SB 2 Barrel
« on: September 04, 2008, 06:11:43 PM »
I just received my new H&R 357 Mag rifle.  It's the new one on the SB 1 frame.  What was unusual in my opinion was that the receiver is marked "for 357 mag, 44 mag and shotgun barrels only" but the 357 Mag barrel says "SB2".

I mounted a trashco bantam 2.5 and I was expecting shooting 2 inch groups at 25 yards.  I started with 38 Special +P loads, 125 gr hollowpoints.  I was rather shocked when they grouped all three touching.  Then I switched over to 357 mag 158 gr hollowpoints and shot two one hole groups.  The ammo I used was Monarch brand.  Granted, it was only 25 yards but I'm still impressed.  Will try 50 yards next but my max on my place is only 75 yards.

Also got my H&R 45-70 but I haven't purchased a scope mount yet.  That one will have an old weaver 2.5X on it.  Will report on that one later.

They mean what they say. The SB1 frame will not handle the pressure of the more intense cartridges. Remember the 357 and 44 mags are not running as high of pressure as some of the other cartridges. Only 357 mag, 44 mag and shot gun barrels for your frame - be safe. The 44 mag barrel I have is of 2007 vintage and it is also marked SB2 and it would go on your frame, but not my 444 Marlin, which is not marked at all with SB2. Go figure, but that is the way it is.

BTW nice shooting, it is great when it all comes together that easy. ;D The 357/38 is a fun cartridge and will not break the bank.

Congrats!! The frame is the determining factor for applicable barrels, that's SOP for the new SB1 357 and 44 mags and combos, the website and catalog are also explicit about what barrels can be used on that frame.  ;)

When I got my .357 and sighted it in at 50 yards it shot one ragged five shot hole off the bench at 50 yards with both 158 gr..357s and ,38 LRNs.  It is going down state soon to a gun smith friend of mine for a .357 Max job.  He's charging me 35 bucks.  I think the reamer rental is 40, and he owns one.

I suprise people regularly with the accuacy of my .357s (I own three with one a Max) The .38 wadcutters are like laser guided, and big fun to shoot.

Get a 20 guage or 12 for that frame and go hunting.

I have one of these new SB1 .357 Mags myself.  I'm thinking they should not be converted to .357 Maximum.  What do you guys think.

Can I ask why they shouldn't be converted?  I'm relatively new at this game, and perhaps you have some facts and information I'm not aware of.  Thanks, Pete

I believe the .357 Max operates at pressures that are too high for the SB1 frame.
